Dakota is not the kind of dog who will rush up to you for belly rubs or kisses the moment you meet her. In fact, when you first see her, you might notice her tucked tail, her hesitant eyes, and the way she keeps her distance. That’s not because she doesn’t want love—it’s because she’s still learning how to trust that it’s safe to receive it.
Born around August 18, 2024, Dakota is a beautiful young dog who missed out on the early, positive human experiences every puppy deserves. Because of that, the world feels a little overwhelming to her right now. But here's the truth about Dakota: once she feels safe, she is sweet, affectionate, and quietly devoted. You just have to be patient enough to give her the space and time to open up—on her own terms.
And when she does? The reward is profound. Her trust is not freely given, but when you earn it, you’ll discover the incredible joy of watching a once-timid dog learn to wag her tail, approach for pets, or even curl up next to you for comfort. These small victories will feel like magic, because they are.
Dakota is a mellow pup with a gentle nature. She doesn't need a lot of chaos in her life—calm, quiet, and consistency are what help her thrive. For that reason, she'd do best in a home without cats or young kids. She also really doesn’t like being alone for long periods, so an adopter who works from home or is home often would be ideal. She might not be your adventure buddy just yet, but she’d love to quietly tag along while you run errands or simply relax by your side.
Despite her shyness, Dakota is still a young dog—playful in quiet moments, curious about the world, and slowly learning to trust it. With time, she’ll show you glimpses of typical puppy energy: soft tail wags, gentle kisses, a love of cozy spots, and maybe even a little zoomie or two in the yard. Her sweetness is real—it just needs nurturing.
If you’re someone who believes in second chances, in the power of patience and quiet love, Dakota is waiting for you. She doesn’t need perfection—just someone who sees the dog she can be and is willing to walk that journey with her.
Come meet Dakota, and let her show you just how beautiful it is when a broken heart begins to heal.

More about this rescue
Hope Ranch Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organization; obtained our 501(c)3 in 2011 - ID #27-0810495
Located in Anza, CA
Kathy Haley had originally started as a rescue for abused and neglected large animals such as donkeys, llamas, alpacas, pigs, and more. At the time, she was also a volunteer at a dog rescue. After learning about the importance of rescue work, Kathy saw an opportunity to help by employing her own ideas about animal welfare, rescue and care taking the "whole animal," mind, body and spirit into consideration. A few years later, she met Lisa Ashe. Kathy and Lisa had so many ideas, dreams, and goals in common. They instantly clicked and that was when Hope Ranch Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit organization, was born in 2011 and have been going strong since.
At Hope Ranch Animal Sanctuary, we are dedicated to taking in abused, neglected, and euthanasia listed animals that deserve a second chance and need us the most.
All of our animals are:
Spayed/Neutered
Current on all vaccines
Rabies Vaccinated
Dewormed
Micro-chipped (lifetime registered & paid)
Received all proper medical care when needed (surgeries, dentals, medications, grooming, etc)
While many of our animals are sanctuary or "permanent residents", we do have lots of adoptable pets who are patiently waiting for their forever homes.
We are unique in the fact that our dogs do not live in kennels; instead they live with us in our home on about 5 acres of property located in Anza, CA or they are in foster homes in and around the Temecula, CA area. They have full access to our home and property and sleep inside with us at night.
This ensures that our pets are well adjusted and perfectly suited to become a part of your family.
Because the sanctuary is also our home, we do not have regular public visiting hours but we do have many visitors.
We just have to arrange it to fit the schedule of our animals, ourselves, and you.
