Meet Shadow Nose: Your Future Best Friend! 💖 Hi there! My name is Shadow Nose and I’ve been waiting patiently for the perfect person to bring me into their family. Could that be you? I’m a 4-year-old, 53-pound, Akita German Shepherd Mix with a heart full of love and a tail that never stops wagging! My foster family says I’m incredibly sweet, affectionate, and well-adjusted with just the right amount of energy to keep you smiling every day.
Here’s a video to help you get to know me better: https://youtu.be/lvdhggj4fPo
🩺 My Special Needs I have been diagnosed with mega-esophagus, a condition that means my throat is oversized and I need a little extra care when eating. But don’t worry — it’s super manageable! My foster family and veterinarian have created an easy routine that keeps me happy and healthy. I even have a fancy custom feeding station (built just for me!) where I eat and drink comfortably.
🐾 Why You’ll Love Me From my captivating smile to my playful spirit, I’m the kind of dog who lights up a room. I’m: - Affectionate: I’ll happily cuddle up with you after a fun day. - Energetic and playful: I love tossing my toys around and trying my best at fetch! - Learning to have good canine manner - I’m crate trained, know how to use a doggy door and can be left home alone without any issues.
🌟 A Star Companion I’m great with adults, strangers and kids and I even love car rides! One of my previous fosters took me to the Veteran’s hospital, where I brought smiles to everyone’s faces. At home, I’m bouncy and playful, but I also know how to wind down with a cozy nap in my dog bed.
🐕 My Ideal Home I’d love to be your one-and-only furry friend, but with the right introductions, I might get along with another dog. I have "bossy" tendencies! I haven’t met any cats yet, so I’m not sure how I’d feel about them. My moderate energy level makes me a great fit for most homes and I promise to fill yours with love and laughter.
💖 Let’s Make It Happen! If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion, I’m your girl. I’ll warm your heart with my adorable smile and keep you entertained with my goofy antics. Check out my video of me tossing my toys around — you’ll see how much fun we could have together! Don’t let my special needs hold you back—I’m one of a kind and ready to join your family. I can’t wait to meet you! Shadow Nose is a level 3 dog and categorized by our organization as a S.O.S. dog, meaning we will pay for any major medical issues from her disease. We will be happy to answer any questions and discuss more details upon request.

TikiHut Akita Rescue Association (TARA) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, animal welfare and education organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of orphaned Akitas and is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California.
Our group is comprised of volunteers, enthusiasts and foster homes. The members in our organization have come together because of the passion we share for the Akita breed. Our breed is respected and treated as royalty in their native Japan, but here in this country, so many of them sit alone in the local shelters, waiting to die. Each of our members (and their families), work tirelessly to save the many Akitas that end up in these shelters.
In addition to finding new homes and families for these wonderful dogs, we also dedicate our efforts to educating the public about the breed, including but not limited to, the importance of spaying and neutering, proper nutrition, behavior and training information and the genetic issues plaguing our breed.
Each Akita we bring into our program undergoes a thorough health exam, is spayed or neutered, brought up to date medically, and is worked with for basic obedience and socialization. We crate train all our pups and put them through basic puppy classes. All our dogs are microchipped before they are adopted.
The Akitas we take in come from all walks of life. Some have been abused and neglected and some have come from well known breeders. It is a huge misconception that all dogs that come from rescue are all problem dogs. We have seen some of the most wonderfully tempered Akitas come out of these shelters and we hope we can give many more a second chance at the life they never had.
