Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Penny 🐶
Penny is a 6-year-old girl who is fully house-trained and looking for a calm, committed home where she can be the center of attention. She prefers to be the only pet and does best when she doesn’t have to share her space.
In kennel settings, Penny struggles with barrier reactivity and can come across as intense at first — lots of barking and growling — but this is all fear-based. Given time, patience, and a gentle approach, Penny completely transforms. Once she warms up, she is incredibly affectionate, loyal, and deeply devoted to her person.
She is very treat-motivated and eager to please. Treats are the quickest way to her heart — one moment she’s unsure, the next she’s sitting politely with the softest puppy eyes you’ve ever seen. She also loves a good butt scratch once she’s comfortable.
Penny is looking for someone willing to go slow, earn her trust, and see past first impressions. For the person who puts in the effort, Penny will be an unbelievably sweet and loving companion.

The AWL is here to find the best match possible between adopters and the animals in our care. Keep in mind that a pet’s personality is way more important, and it’s best to try to find a pet that will fit into your lifestyle.

More about this shelter
The Animal Welfare League is a non-profit organization committed to advocating for animal protection and welfare. We are based in Port Charlotte, Florida. Since 1963 our shelter has served the Charlotte County community by providing a temporary home, medical service and caring attention for many dogs, cats and other animals. These animals come to us as strays, pets given up by their owners, unfortunate animals rescued from abuse and neglect, or simply lost pets in need of being re-united with their families.
