COOPER is a beautiful black and white rough coated border collie, weighing in at 40 pounds and standing about 23” at the shoulder. He is approximately 1-1/2 to 2 years of age. He is a well-balanced boy with brown inquisitive and curious eyes. He is goofy, fun, energetic, sweet and very curious. Cooper loves to explore the yard on his own and mostly stays within eyesight to his humans when outside.
COOPER is incredibly social and is looking for new human friends everywhere he goes. He desires a family who will spend time with him and train him to reach his true potential. Cooper learned very quickly to walk on leash, and his recall is 85% solid, even with distractions. On recall, Cooper will run to get to you. He excels in a structured environment and must have a family who will spend 90% of their time with him. Cooper requires consistent supervision, or he will develop bad habits (that later will be difficult to correct). In foster care, Cooper has not yet been left to run free unsupervised in the house. In training, Cooper is learning to sit, stay, stand, and down. His on-leash training sessions are short and several times a day with positive reinforcement, toy, and/or food treat reward.
COOPER’s time in foster care has not been easy. He arrived at the shelter with a fractured right femur. Cooper underwent surgery in April (2025). The surgery required a plate and eight screws to repair his fractured leg. Thanks to dedicated rehab, Cooper continues to make progress in his recovery. He is currently walking on leash three miles every other day and has three to four, five-minute off leash exercise sessions per day. While he will not be a long-distance hiking or running partner or an agility dog, Cooper is more than capable of enjoying daily leash walks, and active playtime with his human pack members. He is also “border collie smart” and is always looking for something to stimulate his young brain. He has a good “sniffer” and focus, so canine scent work may be just the activity for Cooper. Due to his surgery and rehab, Cooper is not allowed off-leash play with other dogs at this time. While on-leash, Cooper has shown no aggression toward other dogs. He does display a high prey drive and has shown interest in both squirrels and cats.
COOPER does extremely well in his plastic XL dog crate. While in foster care, he has not had any accidents in the house or in his crate. Cooper sleeps soundly and quietly in his crate through the night. When let outside, Cooper will relieve himself on command with positive reinforcement and a food treat reward. He is very content in his crate, with his chew toy, for down time, to take his meals, and to sleep. Cooper travels very well in a hard-sided plastic crate when riding in the car.
COOPER is exceptionally social and loving; he just wants to be everyone’s friend. He is looking for a full-time family, who will love him and include him in ALL their activities and who will support and train him to become the very best dog he can be. He would thrive in a home with a family that has border collie and training experience, one that enjoys working with a young dog that wants or even needs to learn.
