My story

Foster or Forever Home Wanted: Meet Baxter!

Baxter is a 1.5-year-old, 31-lb pocket-sized adventure buddy with a big personality tucked into a petite frame. He’s smart, observant, and always taking in the world around him — sometimes with confidence, sometimes with a little curiosity and caution.

This boy has two modes:  “Hmm… who are you?” and “Hey, you seem cool!”

Depending on the day, Baxter may be unsure of new people or totally happy to say hello. Because of this, he must have slow, proper introductions — ideally with treats involved — to help him feel safe and set him up for success.

But here’s the part his inner circle knows well: once Baxter trusts you, he’ll show you his cuddly, affectionate side that’s absolutely yearning for attention. He just needs that little bit of time to decide you’re “his person.”

Baxter has gone to work with one of our volunteers on the Balboa Peninsula, and he’s done awesome out and about. We believe he has some working-breed smarts (hello, possible cattle dog!) and he absolutely thrives when he has structure, guidance, and a job to do. He will need a confident handler who knows how to stay calm, clear, and consistent so he can continue building trust with new people.

Now for the part Baxter wants shouted from the rooftops…  He is 100% dog friendly. Every dog is his buddy, and he would do best in a home with another confident, well-balanced canine to help show him the ropes and remind him that humans aren’t so scary after all.

Baxter knows his basics — sit, down, and more — and would benefit from occasional refreshers to keep his brain working and his confidence growing.  If you’re looking for a small, smart, loyal dog who just needs a little time and a guiding hand to shine, Baxter might just be your guy.

If you’re interested in fostering or adopting Baxter, please fill out an application at www.labradorsandfriends.org.

Baxter is located in Southern California.
