Mojo turned up alone, in a rural area. A Good Samaritan picked him up, contacted local shelters and posted him online, but no one stepped forward to claim him. He had obviously been cared for and loved. He was clean, his fur soft and shiny. And he had definitely eaten a few too many meals in his lifetime. This is an extremely well-behaved dog. Perfectly housetrained, walks well on a leash, and his finder reported he's good with dogs, cats, and children. He was already neutered and is now current on vaccinations. His heartworm test was negative for everything. Mojo loves to be with his people. He enjoys his comforts: a soft bed, and, this time of year, an air-conditioned space. 240 522 7416 for more information.

Potential adopters physically meet the animal, and me. The person or couple is interviewed in person, a vet reference is checked (if possible), and I visit the home, tour inside and outside, ask any additional questions necessary, meet any live-in family members yet unmet, and sleep on my final decision. The next day I will call with a decision - either way. The adoption fee for a dog is $100, for a cat, $40. The adoption contract includes a takeback policy - in effect for the entire life of the animal- and the right to visit, with notice, and to raclaim the animal in the case of neglect or abuse.

Go meet their pets
I generally will bring a cat to the person for a meet-and-greet. Dog applicants come here, to the rescue, to meet.

More about this shelter
Safe Shelter has been up and running for 22 years. I worked for a year at a large, long-running, widely respected no-kill shelter and this inspired me to try it myself. It is a small, low-budget operation that could really use some volunteer and foster help!
