Sadie unfortunately was attacked, a few years ago, by two other dogs. After a couple of months of intensive medical treatment, including three surgeries, she made a full recovery. She is, however, disfigured; part of her face had to be removed. We think it lends her features some extra character! Now she is a sleek, well-fed, healthy girl who loves to run and play. A bit nervous with strangers, Sadie warms up quickly under a gentle hand. She listens well. Her favorite things include racing around a fenced yard, and chasing a ball. A very sweet and affectionate girl, she does need to be an only pet. Spayed, up to date on rabies and distemper shots, heartworm negative. About 9 years old. 240 522 7416 for more information.

Potential adopters physically meet the animal, and me. The person or couple is interviewed in person, a vet reference is checked (if possible), and I visit the home, tour inside and outside, ask any additional questions necessary, meet any live-in family members yet unmet, and sleep on my final decision. The next day I will call with a decision - either way. The adoption fee for a dog is $100, for a cat, $40. The adoption contract includes a takeback policy - in effect for the entire life of the animal- and the right to visit, with notice, and to raclaim the animal in the case of neglect or abuse.

Go meet their pets
I generally will bring a cat to the person for a meet-and-greet. Dog applicants come here, to the rescue, to meet.

More about this shelter
Safe Shelter has been up and running for 22 years. I worked for a year at a large, long-running, widely respected no-kill shelter and this inspired me to try it myself. It is a small, low-budget operation that could really use some volunteer and foster help!
