My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Pepper: Your New Furry Best Friend! Pepper is a beautiful, active girl (born 2020) who loves to fetch and explore. She’s housebroken, crate trained, leash trained, and knows several basic commands. Under the right conditions, she’s playful, loyal, and ready to shower her person with affection.

Personality & Traits

  • Shy around new people, but warms up quickly

  • Protective of her space and her human family

  • Fetches enthusiastically and loves chew bones

  • Barky at first greeting and can be vocal with excitement

  • Nervous during thunderstorms or fireworks—finds comfort in a thunder coat and cozy hiding spot

Training & Needs

  • Housebroken and litter trained

  • Crate trained for safe, calm downtime

  • Needs a securely fenced yard to burn off energy safely

  • Responds well to consistent training, positive reinforcement, and gentle leadership

The Perfect Home for Pepper

  • A household where she is the only dog

  • A fenced yard for daily play and exercise

  • Plenty of toys and chew bones to keep her mind and body busy

  • A patient owner—ideally female—who can continue her training and provide a calm routine

  • Someone prepared to help her manage noise sensitivities with a thunder coat, blankets, and safe spaces

Ready to Welcome Pepper? If you’re seeking a devoted, smart companion who will love you fiercely, Pepper could be the one. Please reach out to schedule a meet-and-greet and learn more about her story. We’ll share everything we’ve learned and support you through the transition.

  • Adoptions for Pepper are limited to the area within 50 miles of Omaha so that she can continue to take advantage of free training from our certified positive reinforcement trainers.

The suggested adoption donation for Pepper is $375, which includes a lifetime of free relationship-based  training for any behavioral problems (not obedience training). Muddy Paws is a 501c3 non-profit organization meaning that part of your donation MAY be TAX DEDUCTIBLE. We are a 100% volunteer rescue committed to giving animals a second chance at life. All donations go toward that mission. Adoption fees are the primary source of funding for the cost of veterinary care for our animals. In 2022 alone, we provided animal Healthcare totaling over $399,000 covered mainly through adoption fees.

Please Note: A Courtesy Post designates that an animal is still in the home of its owner and not in a Muddy Paws foster.  This means that our exposure to the animal is limited since we only assist the owner in finding a new home for their  pet. From time to time, owners find a new furever home for their pets outside of Muddy Paws Last Chance Rescue, and there is a delay in removing them from our site. We apologize if the Courtesy Post you apply to adopt is  unavailable for adoption.

Information about the adoption process: All adoptions require a completed ADOPTION APPLICATION.  Once your application has completed our prescreen steps, we will put you in touch with the animal’s foster  to see if you and the pet are a good match. If so, we will arrange a meeting for you and the animal. The  adoptions for all of our animals will take place in the Omaha, NE area and must be done by the adoptive  family in person. We do not ship or deliver.

Please Note: We are a RESCUE, which is different from a shelter. We conduct veterinary and personal  reference checks, and a Home Visit (Virtual in some cases) during the application approval process. We  always select the right applicant for each animal, based on the animal’s needs. If you and the animal are  not a good match, we will help you select another animal, or we will keep your approved application on file  for 6 months.

More about this rescue

Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue, Inc. is a not for profit organization formed in 2014 by a small group of devoted animal lovers, in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area, with many years of rescue experience wanting to make a difference in the lives of dogs. Our rescue focuses on small breed dogs, less than 35 pounds, of any age. It is all volunteer based, and all of our rescue dogs are living in the homes of our volunteers.
Our rescue is unique in that we offer supportive services, such as education and training, to owners considering relinquishing their pet in an effort to try to keep the dog in their home whenever possible. We also educate and offer placement assistance to owners attempting to rehome their pets through social media sites, which can often be risky for the pets as well as the owners.
