Orphan kittens usually come to us in litters of three or four. I’m not sure we have had this many same-age single orphans (five) at one time. One kitten, Sugar, is slightly older and has been adopted by a family in Maine. They are flying in to pick her up. The other four are a little younger, but all are active, playful, curious, and loving, and will be old enough to leave for their homes by the first week of October.
Here are their stories: On August 18, a couple out for a walk spotted Pancake, a beautiful black and gray tabby, in the grass next to the sidewalk. They waited for a while to see if there was a mom or other kittens, but then scooped up Pancake and reached out to us. Waffle, a classic brown tabby, came to our rescue later that day after we sent out a call to other rescues for a companion for Pancake. Waffle was found in an empty frozen waffle box by a trash can outside of a thrift shop. You can’t make these stories up. Although both kittens looked about 10 days old, as we watched their development, Pancake may be a few days to a week younger than Waffle, but we are calling their birthday August 8.
Although neither of these kittens are biological siblings, because they have been fostered together, they have all bonded. We have a strong preference for littermates to be adopted in pairs, the advantage being you are guaranteed to have a bonded pair. They are weaned and litter trained.
