My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Alfredo

  • Age: 2.5 years (March birthday)

  • Gender: Male

  • Breed: Mixed – 30% Labrador, 30% Great Pyrenees, 18% Pitbull, and other mixes (DNA results available)

Why He’s Looking for a New Home

Alfredo was adopted through NW Wag Rescue as a tiny puppy after being found in the desert of New Mexico with his mom and seven siblings. His current family has given him a wonderful start and invested time, training, and love into him. However, due to his size, strength, and reactivity around other dogs and strangers, they feel he would be happier and safer in a different environment. With two young children at home and a busy neighborhood, it has become clear that Alfredo would thrive in a calmer, more suitable home. His family loves him deeply, and this rehoming decision is based on what’s best for him long-term.

Personality & Temperament

Alfredo is a loyal, affectionate dog who adores his people. He’s equally happy adventuring outdoors on runs and hikes or spending the day lounging and snuggling on the couch. He’s very attached to his family, following them from room to room, and he thrives on closeness and attention.

He is protective of his home and family, barking at noises or new visitors. With unfamiliar people, he can be nervous at first—barking and growling—but with patience and calm introductions, he warms up and turns into a total sweetheart, often rolling over for belly rubs once he feels safe.

Alfredo is sensitive to loud noises (especially fireworks) and prefers peaceful environments over crowded, noisy places. He enjoys running and zooming in the yard but isn’t interested in fetch or most toys. He does, however, like chew toys, treats, and people food in moderation.

Behavior with People & Animals

  • Kids: Alfredo has been excellent with the two young children in his family. However, due to his reactivity and size, it is recommended that he live in a home without young children for safety and comfort.

  • Dogs: His behavior depends on the setting. At daycare, he does wonderfully, playing with groups of 30–50 dogs and even boarding without issue. At home or on walks, though, he can be reactive—barking, growling, or lunging at other dogs. He once got out and scuffled with a passing dog but was quickly called back and no injuries occurred.

  • Cats: He hasn’t lived with cats. On walks, he tends to bark and pull toward them.

Training & Habits

  • Leash trained: Yes, though reactive toward other dogs at times.

  • House trained: Very reliable and signals when he needs to go out.

  • Crate trained: Yes. Sleeps in his crate most nights and stays crated if left home longer than an hour.

  • Sleeping arrangements: Usually in his crate, occasionally in bed with his family.

Health

  • Alfredo takes 40 mg of Fluoxetine daily to help manage anxiety.

  • Healthy overall with a strong stomach.

Ideal Home

Alfredo will do best as the only pet in a calm home with a securely fenced yard. His ideal adopter will be someone (or a couple) who has time to dedicate to his exercise, training, and, most importantly, affection. Because of his protective and anxious nature, a quieter area outside of dense city life is recommended. In return, Alfredo will give endless love, loyalty, and companionship—along with the bonus of being a natural guard dog.

Strengths

  • Loving, affectionate, and submissive with his family

  • Athletic and well-trained

  • Loyal and protective

  • Low-maintenance lifestyle (happy to lounge or adventure)

Areas for Growth

  • Managing anxiety and nervousness

  • Reactivity toward other dogs while on leash

Please fill out an adoption application to get in touch with his current family and to learn more about him and schedule a meet and greet.
