Special adoption considerations:   Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think he would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.

Melvin is Looking For:   Hi! I'm Melvin. My brother Marcus and I are satos - island dogs from Puerto Rico. We've had a great time in our little puppy pile but now we're ready to split up to get our own humans and become well-loved family pets!

I'm just an older puppy so I'm all about play and snuggles and more play - and world exploration! I want to be right by your side to see all those new places! And I want to make pup pals along the way. Oh and I should go to dog school too, to learn to be the bestest boy!

In exchange I promise to give you all the adoring gazes and tail wags I am storing up - to always put a smile on your face - and to be a loyal, loving companion for all my days. What do you say? Do I get to go home with you?

What My Foster Says About Me: Are you patient? Kind? Do you have a loving lap and a gentle hand? Then you might be the perfect person for Melvin. This sweet, timid boy has been learning how wonderful the world—and its people—can be. His adorable, curious face lights up when he sees a puzzle toy or a peanut butter-filled Kong. He's a smart little guy, eager to learn new things, especially if a snack is his reward!

Right now, Melvin is learning so much. He's learning a lot from his foster sister, looking to her for cues when loud noises scare him. Watching him play and pounce on her, only to curl up for a shared nap afterward, is the definition of heartwarming.

The best news? He's discovering that people are pretty great, too. He's learning that belly rubs are magical and that a human snuggle can be just as comfy as a canine one. He's a great sleeper (though he wonders why his foster mom gets up so early) and is perfectly happy in his crate for meals and naps.

Melvin is looking for a quiet, patient home that will give him the time he needs to blossom. He would do best with opportunities to spend time with another confident, friendly dog to help him build his confidence and continue to show him the way. To watch him come out of his shell is a reward like no other. He is so ready to be your brave boy.

Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.

TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online   at   bit.ly/adoptaluckydog  .

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The adoption process begins when you submit an adoption application either online or at an adoption event. The individual responsible for the dog you are interested in adopting - a position we call the “adoption coordinator” - will then set up a time to discuss your application over the telephone. The adoption coordinator will check your vet reference to make sure all current and past pets were kept up-to-date with their shots and medical care. The adoption coordinator will also set up a home visit with one of our trained volunteers. That individual will come to your home to ensure that it is a safe environment, to confirm that everyone in the home is on board with adopting a dog, and to discuss any other questions you may have about dog adoption!

Go meet their pets

Our adoption events are held each weekend. A schedule of times and locations can be found at www.luckydoganimalrescue.org.
