My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Scarlet is a 1.5-year-old pittie mix who is ready to fill your life with love, laughs and endless entertainment! This girl is looking to be your best friend, shadow, wing man and confidant.  She can be a handful for the first 5 minutes of meeting new people or dogs but she settles in nicely.   She would do best with a dog savvy person as she is smart and responsive to corrections but in need of gentle manner reminders.  Scarlet will happily follow you from room to room to supervise your activities.  She does not want to be left out of the fun.  She is not needy in that she can't be left alone but prefers your company (unless she is in bed and comfy - then she will let you do your thing in peace).

Personality Plus: Scarlet may come off a little strong at first—just a classic Pitt Bull trait—but once you get to know her, you'll discover her sweet, cuddly nature. This intelligent girl is not just a pretty face; she's treat-motivated and eager to learn, making her a great candidate for training!  She will curl up next to you and happily nap or watch tv.  Though she is 40 pounds and fairly small - she gives off big personality vibes.

Adventure Awaits: Scarlet absolutely adores car rides and is always ready for her next big adventure with you!  She is always at the car door ready to jump in (whether or not she is going along).  Once in the car she rides nicely in the back seat.  She doesn’t try to climb in the front and behaves like the little lady she sometimes is.  No car sickness, no struggling to load her up -she is a happy jump away from a car ride.

Home Sweet Home: Fully potty trained and crate trained, Scarlet knows how to use the doggie door, making her a wonderful addition to any household.   She has been non-destructive of shoes, blankets or anything else she should not chew on.  She can entertain herself with toys or a nap when left alone and will walk willingly into a crate.  If you leave her, she is fine.  If you are around - she will remind you she is in the crate and wants to be with you.

A Remarkable Spirit: Despite a scar running down her back from her past mistreatment, Scarlet’s spirit shines bright. Her ability to trust and love people is nothing short of inspiring.  She was kept on a chain for the first part of her life which probably explains her desire for human companionship.  She can be possessive of her people and sometimes her food, but is working on her manners.  She will share her toys and enjoys tug-of-war with her foster siblings.

Health Update: Scarlet is heartworm positive, but has completed her treatment.  With love and care, she can thrive and live a happy, fulfilling life.  She had a mild case and continues to show no symptoms.  She is now on a monthly heartworm medication and will need to be retested in 9 months.   Her activity was limited after treatment so she is getting a little thick but is ready to shed her prednisone pounds as soon as she can.  She should still not be running or hiking until her negative heartworm treatment but can go for walks.  Once she is healed she will be the best hiking buddy.  She loves to explore, run and play with her buddies.

Scarlet is not a fan of large MALE dogs.  It is reported when she was chained (and found with her puppies) there were 2 agressive large male dogs also on the premises.  She will try to establish her dominance immediately (though both the big boys she has met in her foster home were clueless, sweet and not a threat).  She has done well with the average size male dogs (60 and 75 pounds) as well as the females.  She likes the younger pups but can play a little rough if not supervised.  Basically, Scarlet is a little rough around the edges.

Scarlet was in a house with children and loves them.  She is not the gentlest at meeting small humans so older kids preferred.  She will lick and jump and easily knock a youngster over.

Adorable - check   Enthusiastic - check   Smart - check  Trainable - check check

Scarlet is fostered in Colorado Springs.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We are doggie and kitty match-makers. We do everything in our power to assure that our dogs or cats will thrive in your environment.

Please start by submitting an application to adopt on our website. We do our best to respond to all applications but do to the number of applications received, this may always not be possible.

If you, your family and your lifestyle look like a good fit for the personality and needs of the animal, there's a phone call to chat and answer any additional questions. From there we will arrange a no-obligation meet and greet, where the animal could then go home with you, provided it is a good fit for all involved! (All this can happen within a week's time!)

A contract is signed at time of adoption. If for ANY reason you are unable to keep your companion, we quite passionately INSIST the animal be returned to us and NOT dropped in a shelter. We would happily take any of our adoptions back if it proves NOT a good fit for your family. :-)

Adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, basic vaccinations, (including rabies if old enough), deworming, rescue and transport costs, other medical services as needed (which can include but not limited to skin scrape, fecal exam, x-ray, amputation and hospitalization). Felines additionally receive an felv/fiv test and checked for ringworm with the Woods lamp prior to transport.

Adoption fees may vary due to special health circumstances, but typically start with...adult dogs (1 year and older): $450; puppies: $500; adult cats (1 year and older): $200; kittens: $275.

Go meet their pets

We are a foster based rescue ~ we DO NOT have a physical shelter at the moment. All of our dogs and cats reside in foster homes all throughout the Front Range and the Western Slope of Colorado. We have adoption events regularly at Petsmart stores in Denver, CO. If we do not have an event scheduled, we can arrange a time for you to meet one of our animals available for adoption.

More about this rescue

We relocate dogs and cats from high-intake shelters, animal control facilities, and reservations in the Four Corners area to animal rescue partners and forever homes in Colorado. We provide transportation to foster homes and other partner organizations, offer medical care and low/no cost spay and neuter services, manage a network of foster homes for temporary shelter, and run adoption events so that these animals can find forever homes.

Since March of 2012, we have transported thousands of at-risk dogs and cats to safety, solely on generous donations from caring individuals like you who see how dire the need is in and around the Navajo reservation.
