My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Atlas – Your Ultimate Toy-Loving Athlete!

Atlas is a striking 5-year-old Labrador x German Shorthaired Pointer with both brains and brawn, standing tall at 28” and weighing in at 85 lbs. He’s had a few real-world training jobs, but now he’s ready to channel his talents into life as a fun, active companion.

This big guy lives for toys—his drive is off the charts—and he brings all the enthusiasm in the world to playtime. He’s also well-trained, with an impressive resume of obedience skills, hand signals, whistles, and more. Add in that he’s housebroken, crate trained, dog door savvy, and fully vetted with clear hips and elbows, and you’ve got a rock-solid partner for all of life’s adventures.

Atlas is social with dogs big and small, though his pushy, toy-driven style means he thrives best with playmates who can keep up with his energy. He’s already proven himself in dock diving (and is really, really good at it!) and would shine in Nosework, hiking, or just about any outlet for his athleticism and zest for life.

Whether you’re looking for a sport dog, a trail buddy, or simply a larger-than-life companion with endless love for toys and adventure, Atlas is ready to leap into his forever home.

More about this rescue

We are a national training center for search and rescue dogs where we professionally train and then pair talented dogs with fire department handlers at no cost to them. Dogs that do not continue with search dog training (for a variety of reasons) are career changed or available for adoption into pet homes as part of our Lifetime Care Program. This program ensures that once rescued, these dogs never need to be rescued again.

Once we find an adoptive family for our extraordinary dogs, we train the canine and the family, stay in touch with the household, and act as the dog’s advocate for life, making sure that he or she is receiving excellent care in a happy, healthy environment.

The program ensures that every dog in the SDF family has a wonderful life and is in no risk of re-entering the shelter system. This is SDF’s unwavering commitment.
