My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My name is Barney!

I`m a bit of a sensitive giant who is snuggly and cuddly with my human. I like to protect my human from anything and everything. I would love to have my human all to myself but might be willing to share for a couple of humans who are experienced with big guys like myself. I`m a chatty grumbler and would do well with someone who finds that endearing. I am a big softy at heart and love to play with stuffy and squeaky toys when we`re not busy hanging out watching our favorite show!

MY IDEAL HOME INVOLVES…
CHILDREN: I would do best in a calm, adult-only home without too many people.
OTHER DOGS: Potentially, with an easy-going female. I can be picky about my dog friends.
CATS: Potentially, with a cat confident around dogs.
FIRST-TIME DOG OWNERS: I would do best with someone who has experience being the primary caregiver of a dog.
FENCED-IN YARD: Recommended given my size and strength.
HOUSING ENVIRONMENT: No apartment buildings given I don`t always love being with strangers in tight spaces.
SOMEONE HOME MOST OF THE DAY: Not necessarily.

SOME OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME…
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Low-medium.
HOUSE-TRAINED: Yes.

FOSTER ME! I’m excited to be selected as part of the Paisley Project and I’m looking for a foster home! If your home environment matches what I’m looking for based on the information above, please consider applying to foster me by copying and pasting the following link to fill out the questionnaire: https://guelphhumane.ca/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=frm_forms_preview&form=7y88o.
The Paisley Project aims to match selected, long-stay animals at GHS with fosters that can provide a home that gradually introduces them to the everyday experiences of life as a pet. Fosters will offer the routine, structure and stability needed to help get animals ready for their new family. Learn more at https://guelphhumane.ca/the-paisley-project/.

More about this shelter

For 125 years, the Guelph Humane Society has been dedicated to protecting and caring for the many animals with whom we share our community and our lives, and to fostering the important bonds with animals that enrich us as individuals, families and communities. Founded in 1893, the Guelph Humane Society provides care and shelter for more than 3,000 homeless, stray, injured, and abused animals each year throughout Guelph and Wellington County.

Our programs are delivered by an enthusiastic team of staff with many years of experience in animal care and welfare. In addition to paid staff, we are lucky to have over 400 active volunteers who provide thousands of hours of service each year and generously share their skills and ideas.

The Guelph Humane Society has a strong working relationship with local, provincial, and national animal welfare organizations; local school boards; the City of Guelph; Township of Centre Wellington; Township of Guelph-Eramosa; local veterinarians; the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre at the University of Guelph; and Guelph Police Services and the Provincial Crown Attorney’s Office. We are an affiliate society of the Ontario SPCA, and proud member of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS).

Our organization is guided by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers with a wide range of skills and business experience. The Board also convenes several ad hoc committees, which work to address specific issues. Day-to-day operations of the shelter are managed by the Executive Director and senior staff with the Board’s general guidance.

We are a registered charitable, non-profit organization that does not receive government funding. As such, we depend on your donations and private funding to support our important work. The Guelph Humane Society charitable registration number is 119236305RR0001.
