My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Current Location: Bristow, VA

Hello! My name is Aponi! I was named by our 2025 "Name a Transport of Animals" Auction Winner Jatiela Moore!

Aponi is a rare find. She is a turn key companion for the right person or family. She arrived after a long freedom ride and a tough stretch in her young life. Even so, her spirit shines. She has the heart of a lion and the softness of a lamb. She is already showing confidence, sweetness, and surprising resilience.

Energy and Personality
Aponi is loving, affectionate, and eager to bond. She gives kisses, seeks out pets, and wants to be close to her people. She startles at loud city noises but her curiosity overrides her fear. She loves trail walks and watches the world with bright interest. She has balanced energy. She plays, explores, and then settles for cuddles or naps.

Training and Behavior
She is house trained and walks gently on a leash. She responds to light direction and checks in often. She is crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night. She even uses her crate as a safe place during the day. She learned sit in minutes and will pick up more commands fast. She is smart, food motivated, and eager to please. She can self play with toys and shows natural retrieving instincts.

Social Life
Aponi likes other dogs and reads dog body language well. She engages in play but backs off if needed. She has not met cats yet. She appears friendly with everyone and will likely do well with respectful children. She loves people and craves connection. She is cuddly and happy to share the couch.

Special Traits
She is a scent hound with a curious nose. She enjoys adventure but stays polite on the leash. She is confident enough to bounce back from new experiences and soft enough to lean into her people for reassurance. She needs light medical follow up for her spay incision and a mild limp, which are already being managed.

Best Home Fit
Aponi will thrive with a family that includes her in daily life. A home with kids or other dogs would be wonderful. She will blossom with structure, affection, and adventure. She is flexible and can handle suburban life with ease, though she is not ideal for someone who wants a low activity companion or a fully urban environment. She is a loyal shadow, a playful partner, and a gentle friend for a child or adult who wants a deep connection.

MEET AND GREETS

We primarily rely on meet & greets for potential adopters. Approved adopters may meet adoptable animals at the home of the animal's foster, or possibly in the adopter's own home.

More about this rescue

Operation Paws for Homes, Inc. rescues dogs of all breeds and ages from high-kill shelters reducing the numbers being euthanized daily. We provide foster homes where they can get the love and attention needed before finding their forever homes. Our organization provides pet adoption services in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, and parts of Southern Pennsylvania. Operation Paws for Homes, a 501(c)(3) organization, is 100% donor funded and could not save these dogs and fulfill their dreams of being united with their forever families, without the dedication of our incredible adopters, fosters, donors and volunteers. Sadly, without our help, all of these adoptable animals would face almost certain euthanasia - usually within days or hours of arriving at the shelter. Each year we take in hundreds of wonderful animals who were left at shelters by no fault of their own.
