Meet Panda, a 6-year-old, 58-pound Akita Mix, instantly recognizable by her beautiful white coat and striking panda-like mask. With her soft eyes and serene presence, Panda brings a calm, steady energy.
• Polite and easygoing: Panda walks well on leash, only pulling moderately when something especially interesting catches her attention.
• Well-mannered: She may jump a little and wiggle when excited, but sits automatically for treats or when being leashed and responds beautifully to “sit” and sometimes “down.”
• Affiliative and gentle: This sweet girl enjoys neck scritches and soft pets, sitting calmly with a loose, relaxed posture and soft gaze.
• Responsive and engaging: She’ll come over to sniff and check in with her person, always ready for quiet connection and gentle praise.
• Calm and balanced: Panda’s mellow, affiliative nature makes her a joy to be around and easy to handle.
Whether she’s exploring on leash or leaning in for affection, Panda exudes warmth and quiet confidence. She would thrive in a home with well-matched canine companions or as the cherished solo dog, enjoying the company of friendly dog pals on her own terms.

TikiHut Akita Rescue Association (TARA) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, animal welfare and education organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of orphaned Akitas and is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California.
Our group is comprised of volunteers, enthusiasts and foster homes. The members in our organization have come together because of the passion we share for the Akita breed. Our breed is respected and treated as royalty in their native Japan, but here in this country, so many of them sit alone in the local shelters, waiting to die. Each of our members (and their families), work tirelessly to save the many Akitas that end up in these shelters.
In addition to finding new homes and families for these wonderful dogs, we also dedicate our efforts to educating the public about the breed, including but not limited to, the importance of spaying and neutering, proper nutrition, behavior and training information and the genetic issues plaguing our breed.
Each Akita we bring into our program undergoes a thorough health exam, is spayed or neutered, brought up to date medically, and is worked with for basic obedience and socialization. We crate train all our pups and put them through basic puppy classes. All our dogs are microchipped before they are adopted.
The Akitas we take in come from all walks of life. Some have been abused and neglected and some have come from well known breeders. It is a huge misconception that all dogs that come from rescue are all problem dogs. We have seen some of the most wonderfully tempered Akitas come out of these shelters and we hope we can give many more a second chance at the life they never had.
