Anja von Altena is a gorgeous 11-12 month old sable girl with a sensitive heart and a gentle soul. She is a bit overwhelmed in our busy kennel, but always very sweet. Once she feels safe, her affectionate side truly shines; sit on the floor with her, and she will crawl into your lap to shower you with kisses. On walks she looks to her handler for reassurance and comfort, a little sweet talk encourages her to keep moving. A smart, treat-motivated pup who is eager to please, Anya already knows her "sit" and "down" commands. She was relinquished to the animal shelter with two other siblings who had already been adopted by the time we came for Anya. She definitely would like some canine buddies as she gains confidence from other dogs, blossoming into a happy, playful girl when around them. She has passed her initial cat testing. Anja would love a patient home, with another dog or two, to help her realize just how brave and wonderful she can be.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.

Adoption fees vary with each dog and typically range from $150 to $500. They are set, taking into account the dog's age, training level, temperament, if they’re newly arrived, medical condition(s) (if any) and other factors. Adoption fees are used not only to rescue and place the dog you are personally adopting, but to aid in the future rescue and rehabilitation of other deserving dogs. Adoption fees are necessary; without fees, our rescue efforts would quickly come to an end. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, and up-to-date vaccinations.
