Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Chief von Castell is a gorgeous 3-4 year old German Shepherd. He is another breeder dog, already in the back of an animal shelter, he was so sad, he didn’t even want to lift his head. He has a tender heart. Chief now knows only good things are ahead for him. Get ready to fall in love with our big, handsome boy. This charming fellow has mastered the art of the puppy-dog eyes, making it impossible to resist giving him all the affection he craves. Chief is a delight to walk; he heads out with excitement but handles beautifully on a leash, walking in a heel position and happily greeting every person he passes. He is housebroken, wants to please, and treat-motivated (he takes them gently), and currently polishing up his commands. In playgroups, Chief is a comfortable mingler and a polite greeter who prefers the company of calm, easygoing dogs. But he still can maneuver dogs who keep trying to start something, he skillfully keeps turning his body away. (He's not for cats.) We feel so fortunate we got an SOS for Chief, just in time. Hoping you can fill the rest of his life with love and only good things!
Rescued from the Riverside animal shelter.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
