My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

(DOB 08/27/2022) Big Bernie the ultimate gentle giant with a heart as big as his paws!  Bernie is a big, sweet, and goofy boy who’s just waiting for the right person or family to love him. Despite his impressive size and strength, he’s the definition of a gentle soul—affectionate, cuddly, and wonderfully patient, even with young children. His shy but curious nature means he takes a little time to warm up to new people, but once he does, you’ll have a loyal friend for life.  Before we go any further, a few things you should know about Bernie.   We are looking for a home for him within 200 miles of Wake Forest NC as he get car sick and we would not want to put him through a very long ride.  He can also be a little skittish with loud or unfimiliar noises so he can also be a flight risk as well, so again no long car rides.

This handsome hunk enjoys spending his days playing with his canine pals (about five hours of fun daily!) and then winding down for some well-deserved relaxation. He’s smart, eager to please, and learning the ropes of good dog manners—including leash skills and understanding play cues from other dogs. He’s come a long way and continues to blossom with gentle guidance and consistency.

Big Bernie has been good with other dogs he has meet. And actually, he could definitely use another dog for confidence and play in his forever home though it isn't a 100% deal breaker as long as Bernie had human(s) that absolutely love him. He is also kid friendly so a little bonus there! He really hasn't had an opportunity to meet cats yet, so we just don't know.

Bernie eats 1 to 1½ cups three times a day to help him maintain a healthy weight and goes potty regularly (he’s got that routine down!). He currently sleeps peacefully in his own room, where he can stretch out and dream of treats and belly rubs.

Because Bernie is such a big, strong boy, he’ll need an equally confident and physically capable handler someone who can guide him safely on walks and when getting in and out of the car, since he can be a bit of a flight risk if startled. Though he may look like a big-o-brave-boy, he’s not a fan of loud noises like fireworks or lawn mowers, so a calm, quiet home in a more rural area would make him happiest. He is definitely looking for a big yard with a tall fence mabye out in the country a little bit.

Friendly, loyal, and full of love, Bernie is the perfect companion for anyone who appreciates the charm and heart of a true gentle giant. If you don’t mind a little extra dog in your lap (and a lot of love in your life), Bernie is ready to FILL UP your home!

As part of Bernie’s $300 adoption fee, he will be neutered, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and current on his monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. If you have questions about this sweet pup, you can email: Dogteam@pawsforlifenc.org. If you wish to adopt Bernie, you can complete an online application for him under the Adopt a Pet Tab on our website: www.pawsforlifenc.org.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

1. Review the description of the pet you are interested in to make sure that the information we have fits with your particular needs and desires. In most cases, the information on the website is current and gives the information that we have about the particular pet. The picture of the pet does not tell the whole story.

2. Complete the adoption application at https://pawsforlifenc.org. Please make sure that you give us as much information about yourself as you can. List all animals currently living with you including other dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and rodents. The application needs to be complete in order to help us determine if the pet you have chosen is a good match for your home.

3. Once the application is submitted we will contact you, your references, and your vet.

4. We require a home visit prior to dog adoptions.

5. If more than one person applies, we will go with the BEST fit. If all things are equal, we go in the order the applications were received.

6. Once the home visit has been completed, you will be asked to complete an adoption agreement.

7. The adoption fee is $325 for dogs under 6 months, $300 for 6 months and older. The adoption fee is $125 for kittens under 1 year ($225 for 2 kittens), $85 for cats 1 year and older. This fee helps us to provide the necessary medical care and other needs for the pets while in foster care.

8. All Paws For Life NC pets are spayed or neutered if old enough, current on shots, micro chipped, and to our knowledge, in good health before they are adopted out. Puppies under 6 months of age will require a $100 refundable spay/neuter deposit in addition to the adoption fee and a special puppy spay/neuter agreement. Kittens under 6 months will require a $50 refundable spay/neuter deposit in addition to the adoption fee. We are all volunteers and receive no monetary compensation for our work with the pets. The adoption fee is used to help defray costs in the rescue and care of the pets.

9. Congratulations! You are on your way to having your new companion. We hope that you and your new companion share a life of love and happiness. We welcome any comments you may wish to give us about your pet at any time.
