Tugboat is an outdoorsy explorer with a big heart. At the shelter, his happiest moments are spent sniffing around quiet nature spots or working on a good chew toy. He’s an active dog who thrives when he has space to roam and play, and while the busy kennel environment can be stressful for him, volunteers have discovered his true personality during sleepovers and outings—away from the noise, Tugboat blossoms into a joyful, affectionate companion.

This adventurous pup will happily patrol your yard for squirrels and make sure every toy gets its turn out of the basket. Once he knows you, Tugboat’s affectionate side shines through—he loves belly rubs and will reward you with loyalty and warmth.

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 kittens up to 6 months
$120 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note, Adoption and Pet Resource Center lines close at 6:00 p.m. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.
