My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Chicharrón – the ultimate good boy with a heart of gold and a nose for adventure! 🐾🧀💛

Chicharrón is a sweet, playful pup who’s just as happy trotting along on a leash sniffing the breeze as he is squeaking every toy in the basket. He’s a soft, gentle player with other dogs and loves making new human friends—especially if belly rubs are on the table!

This charming boy recently had a field trip to a foster home and absolutely nailed it. He was completely house-trained (not a single accident!), respectful indoors, and settled in beautifully. His one hilarious misstep? He couldn’t resist hopping on the counter to check out a forgotten bag of cheese—but hey, can you blame him? One quick “off” and he was back to being the perfect guest. No repeats, just good boy energy from then on.

He explored the home calmly, played with every squeaky toy, and then curled up on the couch for a cozy nap. When a familiar friend came to visit, Chicharrón greeted her with happy wiggles and calm excitement—clearly a dog who knows how to balance joy and manners.

He also did great in the car, hopping right in, entertaining himself with toys in the backseat, and taking in the world through the window with quiet curiosity.

Chicharrón is the total package: house-savvy, leash-lovin’, toy-obsessed, and full of affection. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who’s equal parts playful and chill, this very good boy is ready to be your new best friend.

Adopt Chicharrón and bring home a dog who’s already mastered the art of being wonderful. 🐶💫

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 kittens up to 6 months
$120 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
