My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Milo, the orange tabby. This handsome guy came to the Shelter due to no fault of his own (landlord said no pets). He lived in a home with two other cats and an outdoor dog. His previous guardian described him as mellow. He got along with a 5 and 6 year old child that would visit. Milo was indoors only in his previous home. His favorite activity is playing with balls – particularly tennis balls!

Our clinic team reports that Milo has a history of signs of of a condition called feline idopathic cystits (FIC), which is a relatively common condition that is often stress-related and can cause a number of symptoms related to the urinary tract. He had a brief episode of bloody urine in the shelter, which resolved with a course of pain and stress medication. His prior owner reported that he had begun to urinate outside of the litterbox recently, which can be a sign of an FIC flare up or be due to envrinmental changes such as moving the litterbox, using a new type of litter, or introduction of a new cat, dog, or person into the home. He has consistently used his litterbox since arriving at the shelter. FIC can be successfully managed for the majority of cats by providing lots of enrichment (play time, scratching and hiding spots, etc.), avoiding stressors (including dirty litterboxes), and potentially use of a urinary diet and/or medication as needed. Occassionally, cats with FIC can experience a life-threatening condition caled urethral obstruction which requires emergency care. The adopter should discuss management and monitoring in greater depth with their veterinarian.

Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
