Meet Spike (ACCT-A-238623)! This handsome spotted boy is ready to find his forever home.
Spike is a sociable and playful boy who was found roaming and brought to us for safety. He loves to give kisses and enjoys playing with toys, especially when he gets to chase them! He's also a fan of enrichment activities like shredding tubes and chewing on dental sticks to help him get some mental stimulation.
He can be a little jumpy and mouthy when he wants attention, so he will need a family who is willing to work with him on his manners and help him channel his energy in positive ways. He gets excited when he sees other dogs, sometimes barking and pulling.
We've been working with Spike here at the shelter to help him feel more comfortable and relaxed. He can get stressed in his kennel, so we try to keep him busy with fun activities, which helps him destress.
Spike is looking for a patient, experienced home to give him lots of love and an outlet for his energy. He'll repay you in lots of playing, kisses, and snuggles!

BEHAVIOR:
Per staff 12/21/2025: Barrier reactivity noted between dogs when going in and out of kennel. Per Aca: He got away from one of the handlers in the room and was “barrier reactive” to one of the kenneled dogs. when trying to get the dog spike air snapped at the ACA
Per staff 12/16/2025: Spike is showing increased kennel stress, running back and forth and panting heavily and jumping up on the door
Behavior evaluation 12/8/2025:
Kennel Presentation: waiting at the front of his kennel with soft eyes, tail low and still. He took treats gently through the door and tail gave mid wags when he saw the leash.
Leash Skills: Leashed easily. Pulled hard throughout kennel, peed as soon as we got outside. Pulled hard and highly vocal toward other dogs that he saw, both through the fence and across the yard.
Sociability: Somewhat aloof in the eval room, not soliciting attention from me at first. Eventually came over to get hot dog (took it nicely from an open palm) and stuck around for some pets. Once I stopped, he gave a shake off and walked away. As we spent longer in the eval room and another staff member joined, he got very jumpy and mouthy, nipping toward the fabric of our sleeves (sweatshirt/jackets). Did not make contact and was deterrable by turning your back/tossing hot dog.
Play: Chased toys and played tug briefly. Enjoyed disposable enrichment, did not show resource guarding with toy when I reached toward it when he dropped it.
Dog Interaction: Attempted leashed meet with Stormy in the eval room. Spike was extremely forward and vocal, pulling hard and barking/screaming. Did not move forward with face-to-face meet due to overarousal of both dogs.
Return to Kennel: Bucking, pulling toward other kennels to bark at dogs in their kennel. Took 2 handlers to return (would likely be possible with one with use of high value treats - he went in willingly for hot dog)
Color Level: Experienced blueRecommendations and considerations: Watch out for mouthiness when overaroused
