My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Who could walk away from these big, soulful brown eyes?

Well…someone did. And that’s exactly how our beautiful new girl Bowie came into our lives.

We don’t know what her name was during the first year of her life, but none of that matters now. What matters is that her future is bright, her past is behind her, and from this moment on her life is filled with nothing but promise and happiness.

Bowie—a petite 45 pound fox look-alike—was abandoned in a rural area, where she was eventually discovered by a group of hunters. This smart little cookie quickly won over the heart of one of them, and he simply couldn’t leave her behind when it was time to go. Because of that kindness, Bowie’s story didn’t end in the woods—it’s just beginning.

She has been vaccinated and, unfortunately, tested heartworm positive. While she doesn’t appear to have ever had puppies, we can’t assume she’s been spayed, so she’ll undergo surgery soon to be sure she’s fully vetted and ready for the next chapter.

Right now, Bowie is staying with one of our wonderful foster volunteers, but their resident dog isn’t quite sure about sharing the home—so this sweet girl needs a new place to land. She is friendly with people and other dogs, though she has not yet been tested with cats or small children.

Fostering truly saves lives.

Dogs like Bowie survive—and thrive—because someone opens their home and heart, even temporarily. When you foster, you give a dog safety, stability, and the chance to begin again. Without fosters, dogs like Bowie have nowhere to go. YOU become the bridge from abandoned to adored.

We think Bowie’s ideal foster (or foster-to-adopt!) home includes a fenced yard and another kind, playful dog to show her the ropes.

If you can help this darling girl, please complete our foster application at www.dsda.org/foster.

Even a short-term foster can make a life-changing difference.

To meet Bowie in person visit us at www.dsda.org/adopt and submit our online adoption application.

ADOPTION FEE Covers: Core vaccines plus Lepto and Flu, all boosters, microchip, dewormer until clear fecal test & spay or neuter when completed by a DSDA vet partner plus any necessary medical care.  All dogs are on flea, tick and heartworm prevention and you receive the following month's preventatives complementary with your adoption!

Qualifications for Adoption:  No dog is alike and each dog has different requirements based on breed, age, energy level and life experiences. DSDA is very careful to place our dogs in homes that we believe are the best fit for the dog based on our experience with each dog. All of our dogs live in foster homes which allows us the opportunity to learn about their individual needs.

  • Must be home more than not.

  • Vet checks are required! All resident pets in the applicant's home MUST be spayed or neutered, core vaccines up to date and dogs on heartworm prevention to be considered! No exceptions.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting one of our amazing dogs:

1. Please fill out an adoption application. We will be in touch shortly after receiving your application to review it with you.

2. If the application is approved, the adoption team will work with you and the foster to schedule a meeting. You are also welcome to attend our adoption events to meet our dogs, however, it is encouraged to email us first to ensure a particular dog will be attending the event.

3. After meeting the dog, if all parties agree the process should continue, a home visit wil be scheduled and you will be asked to have a list of supplies ready for your dog to come home.

4. If the home visit is successful, the adoption contract is signed, the adoption donation is collected, and your dog stays with you that day. During the 10-day trial period, you and your dog will decide if it is the absolute perfect fit. If it's not, you will work with the adoption coordinator to return the dog.

Adoption Fee - The adoption fee helps cover your dog's basic health needs including spay/neuter and vaccinations. Because many of our dogs come straight from the street, their medical needs are extensive. We spend an average of $500 on each pet for medical needs, training, and rehabilitation. For this reason, we kindly ask for the following minimum donations: $300 for puppies 12 months and under & $250 for adult dogs.
