My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Blue (ACCT-A-238540) is an approximately 5-year-old neutered male dog who was surrendered by his owner on 12/11 due to moving to a smaller home that does not permit large pets.

Blue has been quite fearful at the shelter and is looking for a rescue partner who can give him the time and space to decompress! Email lifesaving@acctphilly.org if your rescue can help.

Behavior:
Per Volunteer 12/20/25: When I approached his kennel, he was sitting at the front of it, looking up at me giving soft little barks. He had a very wagging tail and allowed me to leash easily on the first try. He pulled decently to get out of the shelter and when we got outside. In the play yard he was a little bit standoffish when we first got out there. He took treats when I dropped them on the ground. He didn’t seem to want to take them from my hand. After a few minutes, he did take them from my hand and was very gentle with it. He seemed to know sit and often times when he did it, he put one of his paws up, however it didn’t seem like he knew it on command. Spent most of the time in the play yard calmly walking around and sniffing. Would give me tail wags when I gave him vocal encouragement. Going inside he hesitated to walk down his kennel row then with a bit of leash pressure he went in with no issue.

Play group 12/19/25:
Blue was semi steerable and had good greetings. He was neutral in the yard with his tail low/tucked. he was exit searching in the yard but was curious when there was only 1 other dog. he tried engage in some play, getting looser but was a bit nervous

On 12/13 staff noted: “Had he and Coco mingle in the pen. He had tail down, ears to the side, moving about fluidly. When dogs would pass by they would push into each other at the fence and it ended in a small scuffle that was broken up easily with claps and verbal correction.”

On 12/13 Behavior evaluation staff noted:

“Kennel Presentation: Blue was laying on his bed with wide eyes. once i opened the kennel door he got up and lowered his head. his tail was low as i tossed some treats in. he declined them and stood in place. i tried calling him towards me but he pushed right out and went under the kennel. once secured i was able to get him out

Leash Skills: pulls minimally, ran under kennel, flinched at all noises, scared of quick movements, fearful on leash, tucked tail

Sociability: In the room Blue was very slow moving and close to the ground. he had his eyes wide and tail low. i crouched down and waited for him to approach me. he walked all around the room, around me, and near the door but never solicited. i tossed some treats, hard soft and high value but he refused everything. he sniffed my hand once i offered some spray cheese and ate most of it before being startled by the door outside closing. he ignored me most of the time, exit searching and trying to hide. he allowed me to approach him slowly and give him pets. he gave me 2 low wags before walking away again. i grabbed the leash for us to head back and he lowered himself with some lip licks.

Play: did not attempt

Dog Interaction: N/A

Return to Kennel: Needed some leash pressure to return

Color Level: exp blue”

On 12/11 previous owner noted: "Blue can be initially reactive when he cannot see who is entering the home and may bark, but he calms quickly once he realizes there is no threat. He would thrive in a home with ample space to roam and an owner who can provide regular walks, exercise, and playtime. Blue does not do well with cats and is reactive toward them.

He is a high-energy dog who loves exercise and play, enjoys tug-of-war, napping, spending time with his people, being petted, and playing with kids and other animals. He can become overstimulated at times, experiences some separation anxiety when left alone and pulls slightly on leash.”

Medical:
On 12/16 staff noted: "Assessment:
This dog has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They have been started on medication, and will be monitored for resolution of the respiratory infection.

Plan
Doxycycline 10 mg/kg PO SID X 14 days per DR orders”

On 12/11 intake staff noted: "Male intact. Eyes and ears are clear and clean. Nose is clear and moist. Staining on all teeth. Gums are pink and moist. Bright, alert, responsive and allowed all handling.”
