Here's what the humans have to say about me:
✨ Max – Proof That Joy Is a Muscle (and He’s Been Working Out) Age: 1 year Breed: Mixed Size: Medium Coat: White with brown spots, perfectly splattered with personality
Max is living, bouncing proof that resilience can look really fun. When he first came to us, he was severely underweight — but with care, groceries, and lots of love, he’s filled out and found his spark. And wow… that spark is bright.
This young guy is packed with energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm for life. Max plays with his whole heart and greets each day like it’s a brand-new adventure. He’s still learning to trust other animal companions, but he’s made impressive progress and continues to grow more confident with every positive experience.
Max’s Ideal Home: A loving, patient home that appreciates a spirited young dog who’s still learning the ropes. Someone who enjoys playtime, encouragement, and celebrating little wins will help Max continue to thrive.
Max didn’t just gain weight — he gained hope, confidence, and a whole lot of joy. Now all he needs is a forever family to share it with. 🐾💛 Give us a call at (740) 314-5583 for more information!
ADOPTION APPLICATION: All adoption applications are completed at the shelter unless otherwise noted.

More about this shelter
We are the Jefferson County Humane Society and , except for our humane officers (who are paid very nominally), we are all volunteers! Our members were instrumental in getting a local levy passed to build a new and larger shelter and the doors opened in 2011. We are currently participating in Iams Home for the Holidays Program and the Purina Pets for People grant program. We are actively pursuing other grants and recently have been asked by the county to partner with them in the operation of the new shelter. Since we are a humane society, our main focus is on getting animals spayed and neutered so there are no more homeless pets. To that end, we bring in a mobile animal surgical clinic who performs spays and neuters at a reduced rate. We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts and, of course, for financial contributions (we are a non-profit, 501 (c)3) and pet adopters! Other items such as food, treats, pet carriers, cages, leashes, collars, food bowls, etc. are also ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Please contact us if you have an item to be donated or would like to volunteer with us to try to save some of these homeless, but very loveable, dogs!
