My friends at Wayside say: -I`m a goofy guy who loves playtime! -I have a real affectionate side underneath! -My coat is the envy of all who know me
My home preferences are: -I will need to acclimate in the home. -I will need very slow introductions to any resident pets. -Children in home must be 10+.
Hey there, I’m Hard Hat. I have to have a hard exterior to protect my sensitive soul. I ended up at Wayside as a stray just before Christmas; can you imagine that? Finding myself without my family just before Christmas- that was hard. At least I got to be warm and have a full belly here. Overall, I didn’t hate being at the shelter. Some things were new to me and took me time to warm up to, but once I got comfortable, I enjoyed flopping on my side for pets.
It wasn’t long before I was adopted and went home to a family with young kids. Although I do enjoy being pet, I do still have boundaries and it’s important that they are respected. Unfortunately, the kids in that home didn’t understand how to listen to my boundaries, so I had to make them more firm when I’d have enough and they weren’t listening. It just wasn’t a good fit. I was returned, then adopted again, but those adopters immediately introduced me to their dog and cats. It was so overwhelming; I didn’t know what to do, and I lashed out from stress. Less than a day later, I found myself back at the shelter once again.
In the span of a month, I’d already been through so much back and forth without a chance to ever really get comfortable. That’s when my foster mom came along to help. She took me home to give me a safe place to decompress, and to see if the issues I’d shown in my previous two homes would continue. She understood the importance of giving me a safe, quiet place to get comfortable, and that was just what I needed!
Now, I love pets from foster mom. I run to her for pets and can’t get enough! I still have boundaries, but as I’m getting more comfortable, I’m learning to let my walls down. I’m even learning to co-exist with the other cats in the home. At first, I hissed at them through barriers a lot, but with slow introductions, I am understanding they’re not so scary, and I’m starting to get along.
I’ve been through so much change, it’s hard to learn to let new people in. Foster mom has help
