My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kami is an 18-year-old beautiful, slow and sound standardbred mare. When she came to us from the killpen, it was determined that her eye was already dead and it was subsequently removed.

Horses are very adaptable and cope surprisingly well with one eye. They rely heavily on hearing, smell, and memory. They have a wide field of vision, even with just one eye. Most adjust relatively quickly after eye removal and go on to be ridden, compete in sports, live in herds, and act completely normal to people who don't know their history.

They can be helped by some small adjustments such as approaching them calmly from the sighted side first, keeping fencing and physical environments consistent, and training handlers and riders to be aware of the blind side.

Most of these things become second nature over time, and they can go on to live full, happy and more relaxed lives because they're now rid of the pain often associated with the problem eye.

We've had riders on Kami, and she has done wonderfully well! She's a sweet girl that would make someone a great partner!

Kami is currently available for adoption to a qualified applicant for $1,250.

Additional adoption info

If for any reason an adopter needs to rehome their horse after the adoption contract period has ended, we always encourage the adopter to contact us to arrange a surrender back to us. This ensures our horses never end up in the slaughter pipeline.
