My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hulligan is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match!

Hulligan embodies everything we love about dogs: he is resilient, he will see only the best in you, and he would give you the world if he could, all without asking for much in return.

Hulligan arrived up north a few years ago, from a rescue in rural Texas where he lived for over two years! His adopters, a family in this area, adopted him based on pictures, videos, and his story without meeting him first. But it was love at first sight as soon as Hulligan stepped off the transport van! He settled into "northern" life with his new family easily, and loved his new canine sibling as well. His canine sister had been adopted from our shelter a few years prior.

Sadly, life changed for Hulligan's family. Since they had also adopted a dog from us ten years prior, who was now 11 years old, they reached out knowing that we would take her back into our care. Though he was not adopted from us, they hoped that we would consider taking Hulligan too. Of course, once we met Hulligan we fell madly in love with him and agreed to take him in as well.

Hulligan was always more bonded to his canine sister than she was to him; she is an independent gal, while Hulligan loves the company of other dogs. The family knew these two were not a "bonded" pair and that we could not keep them together, but we wanted to make sure to place Hulligan in a foster home with another dog so he would not have to adjust to being a solo pet in addition to everything else.

Hulligan has been living in a wonderful foster home with a 5 year pup, and they get along great! His foster mom writes, "Hulligan lives with my Golden Retriever and loves wrestling with him in the back yard or just hanging out together in the house. Intro was super easy. I believe he will love any and all dogs."

Hulligan has all the traits you would expect in a distinguished gentle-dog and more: he is housebroken, able to be left alone during the day free in the house, walks very nicely and is not reactive to people, dogs, wildlife, etc.

Hulligan may be a "senior" but he is in great shape! Our vet even remarked on his nice teeth! He loves walks, and even gets the zoomies at times! He can play-wrestle with the other dog, or snooze the day away.

His foster mom says, "Hulligan is the best boy ever and is a very youthful 10 years old. He is one of the easiest, most chill dogs I’ve ever fostered! Fully potty trained, no accidents, no destructive behaviors, loves all people and dogs. Loves walks, affection and naps. He would fit in perfectly with any family!"

If you can be the happy ending that Hulligan so deserves, please reach out to us today to learn how to set up a meet and greet.

Hulligan’s adoption fee is $175 (or waived for an adopter aged 65 or older!). This animal is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
