Meet Valka, a curious and gentle soul looking for her forever family. She was rescued from the streets of Puerto Rico by our team, so she had a rough start to life -- but you would never know that due to her warm heart and friendly disposition.
Valka flew from our Sanctuary to New Jersey on December 28th, 2025. She has been doing wonderfully in a foster home ever since. Here's what her foster parents have to say about her:
"Valka is very submissive and friendly with people she knows. She takes a little time to warm up to new people, but will eventually become very attached. She initially wasn't a fan of crates but has been getting used to it, now settling in there during the day while I work. She LOVES her dog bed - she sleeps all night on it. Her personality is puppy-like; she'll steal shoes or other small items and bring her to her bed. Not to tear them up, just to have them close by like friends! She adores the snow and does great on walks, and also does great in the car. Her perfect home would be with a dog savvy owner that has flexibility to give her attention during the day. Overall, Valka is very loving."

The Sato Project is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico. There are currently an estimated 500,000 stray dogs roaming the island’s streets and beaches. With no access to food, fresh water, or veterinary care, many of these dogs are living daily lives of severe suffering. The municipal shelter system is drastically overwhelmed, with only five shelters across all 78 of the island’s municipalities. These shelters have a combined euthanasia rate of over 94%. For thousands of stray and abandoned dogs in the area in which we operate, we are their only hope.

In order to meet our adoptable dogs you need to first complete our Adoption Application which can be found here: http://www.thesatoproject.org/applicationform. We will then get in touch to process your application and set up a virtual meet and greet with our dogs in Puerto Rico. We will then let you know when your Sato will be making their flight to the mainland!
Our adoption fee is $650. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, fully vetted and vaccinated and microchipped.
