My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Cheesecake 🍰

Cheesecake is a shy, one-year-old cat who spent much of her life outdoors and is still learning to feel comfortable around people. Because she doesn’t have a lot of experience with human interaction, new situations can be intimidating for her, and she prefers to take things slowly.

Cheesecake is gradually coming out of her shell and showing small signs of progress each day. With patience, understanding, and gentle reassurance, she has the potential to continue building trust. She will do best with someone who is willing to give her time, respect her boundaries, and show her love at her own pace.

She is spayed and fully up to date on all her vaccines, so she’s ready to find her forever home. Even if she isn’t immediately affectionate, Cheesecake still deserves a calm, loving environment where she can feel safe and secure.

If you would like more information about Cheesecake or are interested in adopting her, please contact the shelter at 740-314-5582.

More about this shelter

We are the Jefferson County Humane Society and , except for our humane officers (who are paid very nominally), we are all volunteers! Our members were instrumental in getting a local levy passed to build a new and larger shelter and the doors opened in 2011. We are currently participating in Iams Home for the Holidays Program and the Purina Pets for People grant program. We are actively pursuing other grants and recently have been asked by the county to partner with them in the operation of the new shelter. Since we are a humane society, our main focus is on getting animals spayed and neutered so there are no more homeless pets. To that end, we bring in a mobile animal surgical clinic who performs spays and neuters at a reduced rate. We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts and, of course, for financial contributions (we are a non-profit, 501 (c)3) and pet adopters! Other items such as food, treats, pet carriers, cages, leashes, collars, food bowls, etc. are also ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Please contact us if you have an item to be donated or would like to volunteer with us to try to save some of these homeless, but very loveable, dogs!
