My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our longest stay dog with the biggest heart we've ever had!

In December 2024, when Houston experienced some of its coldest nights of the year, a frightened dog was running loose through a neighborhood—alone, confused, and terrified. That dog was Brody.

Brody had been abandoned. He didn’t understand why the people he once depended on were suddenly gone, and he didn’t trust anyone who tried to help. Every time someone approached, Brody ran. He refused to be touched, choosing fear over the risk of being hurt again. While families stayed warm inside their homes, Brody survived the freezing nights on his own, carrying nothing but instinct and fear.

For weeks, our volunteers showed up for him—patiently, quietly, without expectations. No chasing. No pressure. Just food, gentle voices, and consistency. Slowly, Brody began to realize that these humans were different.

Eventually, he allowed himself to step into a backyard where we set up heat lamps and an enclosed kennel to protect him from the cold. That kennel became his safe place. For the first time in weeks, Brody could rest without fear. He grew fond of that little space because it meant warmth, safety, and choice—things he hadn’t had in a long time.

But Brody’s journey didn’t end there.

He was absolutely terrified of a leash. To Brody, it felt like losing control all over again. So we went at his pace. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Every small step mattered—letting the leash be near him, touching it, standing calmly with it, learning that it didn’t mean danger.

And then one day, Brody walked.

Today, Brody walks on a leash—a milestone that represents so much more than movement. It represents trust. Healing. Courage. It represents a dog who once ran from every human, choosing instead to walk beside one.

Brody’s story is a reminder that broken doesn’t mean hopeless, and scared doesn’t mean unlovable. Sometimes, all it takes is time, patience, and someone willing to believe.

Brody believed. And now, he’s learning how to live again.

More about this rescue

In many areas of the country, especially in the South, the situation for animals is desperate: Chained outside and starving, homeless and running loose, or just simply no longer wanted and abandoned in an overburdened and underfunded facility that can’t possibly take another. For these animals, there is not much hope…except to look in the night sky for the North Star, their only way out. We are a group of passionate volunteers committed to saving these innocent dogs and finding them a new forever home. NorthStar Pet Rescue was founded in 2017, and although we might be a relatively new name among New Jersey animal rescues, you may recognize some of us from the work we’ve done volunteering with other rescues to help animals over the past decade. We are 100% dedicated to operating in an safe, transparent, and ethical manner and to ensuring the best veterinary practices are followed with regards to the care and transport of our animals. NorthStar Pet Rescue is IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization (EIN: 81-5348036).
