Kiran’s journey has been one of perseverance. He was hit by a car in September 2025, when a good Samaritan took him to an emergency hospital where he was treated for a trauma to his head and vision loss. He was then transferred to Black Cat Rescue, where he has made great strides in his recovery. He had to have one eye removed, and his remaining eye has little to no vision. He is estimated to be 1 year old, is neutered, dewormed and up to date on vaccines. Here’s what his foster volunteer says about him:

How would you describe the cat's general personality?

Kiran is a playful and snuggly (on his terms) cat. He loves to chase ribbons, play with toys, and find a comfortable soft surface to nap on. Over the weeks we've had Kiran, he has emerged as a cat who likes to be pet and snuggle, as long as it's on his terms.

Does the cat enjoy being pet?

Yes, Kiran likes to be pet if he's in the mood.

If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet?

He really enjoys head and cheek scratches, as well as his back.

Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched?

He will roll over and expose his stomach, but he does not like being touched there.

Does the cat come on your lap?

Yes, if you are sitting on a couch or chair he will definitely settle in on your lap for extended cuddles. This is especially true at night where he'll stay in a lap until it's bedtime!

Does the cat like to be held?

No, he does not like to be held and it should be avoided unless it's necessary (e.g., a trip to the vet).

Does the cat sleep in your bed?

Yes, he sleeps in my bed most nights, sometimes leaning slightly against me or other times on top of my legs/feet.

Does the cat seek your attention?

Yes, he will climb in your lap or follow you around the house if he wants more food.

Does the cat like to play?

Yes! He loves to play with a human friend or by himself. He also has a very cute habit of "claiming" human objects and taking them back into "his" space.

What are the cat's favorite games and toys?

He loves to chase string or ribbons and will bat around soft cat toys on his own. He also likes to "attack" his standup scratching post.

How vocal is the cat?

He can be vocal, but it's not often. He'll give a soft chirp if he's resting and you give him a pet.

What kinds of sounds does the cat make?

Mostly soft chirps, sometimes a nice meow.

Does the cat scratch a scratcher?

If no, please explain.

Yes! He's very good at using his horizontal scratcher and his upright scratching post.

Does the cat always use the litter box?

If no, please explain.

Yes, he always uses the litter box.

What food and frequency is the cat currently eating?

He is freely fed meaning that his food is replenished as often as necessary. At my house, he's only given wet food but he'd probably like dry food if he tried it!

Is the cat picky about food?

Yes, he much prefers gravy to pate. He also likes brand and flavor variety so his food is rotated with brands like: Reveal, Fancy Feast, Nature's Promise, and PurinaOne.

What is the cat's favorite treat?

He loves the Temptations brand treats and Churu (any flavor).

Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?

Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you?

Kiran has scratched and swatted before, but this has not occurred since he started on Fluoxetine. Please note that if you attempt to pet him when his belly is exposed, you may get swatted. As long as you're aware of his body language, swatting/scratching should not be a problem.

Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you?

Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)?

When I attempted to give him eye drops, he did try to bite me. He hasn't since I've stopped giving eye drops.

To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful?

With a warm up period, he'll be in the same space with new people but will not usually approach right away.

If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on?

I do not have other animals in my house so I'm not certain how he would do.

Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions?

Despite being low/no vision, he is extremely adept at getting around and playing. He likes to hang out on the tops of couches/chairs, has great leaping abilities, and we often forget that he probably can't see much/anything.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt?

The best thing about Kiran is despite having a really rough origin story (getting hit by a car with a long recovery period, being terrified of humans) he has learned to trust and has become a certified lap cat!!

What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them?

The biggest challenge with Kiran was that he was fearful of humans, but with consistent positive human interactions he's really come out of his shell. You do need to be aware of his body language and recognize when he's had enough (pets, snuggles), but he gives enough signs so awareness and patience are crucial. Because of the need to be aware of his body language, I wouldn't recommend that Kiran go to a home with young children, but he would probably be fine with cat-savvy older kids.
