This helps New Beginnings International Sporting Dog Rescue with pet care costs.
Socialization: Pippin is a very friendly puppy! He does not jump up when he meets new people. He is sweet and submissive around new people until he gets to know them. Pippin loves cats and always wants to play with or be near our cat. Pippin would be great in a house with kids, cats or another dog.
Training: Pippin is a puppy so he is still learning his new commands like sit and stay. Pippin does not counter surf. He seems to like to go into his crate for naps and at night time. He does like to steal the occasional shoe and run. He is a puppy, so he is still learning what is a dog toy and what is not! Pippin loves his toy box and plays with all of his balls, stuffy toys and other toys.
Activity requirements: Pippin loves to run in our backyard with a stick in his mouth. He is always looking up at birds and is curious about the sounds he hears outside. He loves to go out on walks. He still needs to learn how to walk on a leash, but he is a little quick and smart boy. He walks well with harness on.
Fence requirements: Pippin does well inside of our 4' fence. A fenced in yard would be best for him since he is very playful and loves to run off leash in the backyard. He does not attempt to jump the fence ever. An invisible fence or a home without a fenced yard, if there is a solid exercise plan in place, would also be options for him.
Personality: Pippin is a young and sweet English Setter. He is very alert and curious and he loves to play. He is a snuggler and loves to sit next to the person he is with. He takes to everyone in our family and the pet sitter who comes to walk him while we are at work. He is extremely social and acts like a big baby. He is very pretty with his orange belton coat and has the look of a bench type setter but does have a prey drive outdoors. His coat is very soft and shiny. He’s a beautiful dog and everyone remarks on his looks and how sweet and well behaved he is.
Health history: Pippin arrived in rescue with severely dislocated knees (luxating patella) that he required surgery for when he was only 4 months old. The vet performing his surgery noted: "we noted bilateral staged 4 lateral patella luxation. In radiological evaluation we noted loose hips (pennhip method) and positive Ortolani. Considering the age of the dog (4 months old) and the open growth plates, we performed surgically only trochleoplasty, medial imbrication of soft tissue as well as lateral soft tissue release and juvenile pubic symphisiodesis. We suggest re-evaluation when grown plates will be closed (CT scan) in order to discuss the need of corrective osteotomies and patella groove replacement." Pippin is currently doing well since his surgery, he runs around in the yard and up and down the stairs or couch without any issues at all, with no ongoing care required for his knee. However, once he is old enough that his growth plates have fully closed, he will need to be re-evaluated to see if he needs any further surgery for his knees and/or hips, likely around 10-12 months of age. The rescue will support whatever care/procedure (if any) is needed for him at that time. He will also need to be neutered when he is re-evaluated. He is microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next leishmaniasis test is due in September 2026.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: Pippin would do very well and enjoy a home with children, a cat, or another dog in the home. He will adapt quickly to any environment due to his young age. You can tell that Pippin was treated very well in his life because he is very sweet and loveable. Anyone who adopts him will fall in love right away. He is a doll.
Given that Pippin is still growing and his medical status will need to be re-evaluated in a few months' time and his current foster is unable to keep him for this length of time, he is looking for an adopter, a foster-to-adopt home, or another foster home that will work with the rescue through his re-evaluation and be willing to take him through any procedures if it is determined that he needs further procedures/medical care. New Beginnings Rescue will fully support whatever care/procedures he might need.
