My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Amira’s name means “princess” or “commander,” and you can see in her eyes that she is! As mother of the celestial kittens, she lets them know what’s expected of them and they listen.

Amira isn’t your basic tabby; she looks more like an exotic Ocicat with her sensational spotted coat and prominent, pointy ears. This enchanting 1–2- year-old girl is ready to shed the life of a stray and a young mother and is looking for a kingdom of her own, where she can reign peacefully with her people and another feline friend.

At such a young age, this beauty has already had a litter of 5 kittens. She was trapped as a pregnant stray living in a colony in Jordan, MN, and luckily had her babies in a warm, loving home.

She was wary of everything, at first, but has come around to liking scratches on the chin, being near the action in her favorite safe spots, chortling for “role call” of her kittens, and sampling ALL the treats. She’s a mellow girl who will sit next to you if you’re eating something tasty.

This princess is always the last one noshing on the wet food, making sure all her kittens are members of the clean-plate club as well.

Amira isn’t much of a lap cat, but she does like to be near you, sitting on the couch next to your or the chair nearby. She likes to stretch out on the scratching posts or cat tree but isn’t interested in being up high. The dining room chair or the base of the cat tree are her favorite resting spots – that way she can keep tabs on all her kittens.

Currently, this striking love lives in a foster home with her 5 kittens, and two adult humans.

She has lived in a colony with other cats and would probably enjoy a feline friend, maybe even one of her kittens. Her ideal home might be on the quieter side, with adults or older children who will respect her space when needed.

Amira can be a little reserved at first and might spend some time under the couch, but after a few days, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing, furry companion who brings her own loving, quiet presence to any room!

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
