Standard grey male chinchilla -- "Jerry"
Born 9/2021 -- 4 years old
Surrendered -- 9/6/2025
**Jerry had a friend prior to coming to the rescue, though he and the buddy had to be separated due to squabbles. It's not clear who started the squabbles, so there's a possibility that he could be paired again in the future (at a new home...we would suggest a very slow intro)**
Jerry is a bit of a Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde chinchilla, at least here. In his cage, he's very barky and will stand up and posture, like he's going to bite. He's never bitten us, though his previous owner stated that he did bite them, and he did draw blood.
However... when you get Jerry out of his cage, he is happy as a darn clam. He does great with being handled and petted, and he enjoys checking things out. He enjoys playtime. His previous owner dubbed him "a parkour puppy" and I can understand why. He will climb right up on your body / arms / shoulder / head and is super friendly. He has no desire to bite or act defensive / aggressive when he's NOT in his cage.
We have a video showing what Jerry is like inside and outside of his cage. If you're interested in adopting, please reach out and we'll gladly show you what he is like.
Probably the idea living situation for this little dude is someone who can get him out of his cage and into a playtime setting easily, such as... having a ramp from his cage to the floor (where playtime is) so he can let himself out of the cage. An alternative might be putting a carrier up to his cage, having him hop in, and having him hop out in a playtime area (though that may take more convincing).
When Jerry is acting defensive... he in *intimidating.* Knowing that he has bitten and drawn blood in the past, he should not go to a home with little kids.

Our adoption process requires all of our potential homes to read our care packet and fill out an adoption form. The care packet talks about the care and needs of the specific animal the home is looking to adopt. The adoption form asks questions about the type of home the animal will be going into, what type of cage will be used, what type of food the animal will be fed, and so on - questions to verify that the pet will be cared for well in its new home. There is no application fee with our rescue, the only fees are the adoption fees for the pets.

Go meet their pets
Visiting our adoptable animals requires an appointment. To make an appointment with us, give us a call 219-789-0026. The rescue is run out of our house, so we are not always home for someone to view the animals. We are home most afternoons/evenings, and people are welcome to come visit then (after having called and set up an appointment).

More about this rescue
I am Ashley Gajda and I am the "owner" (if it could even be called that) of the rescue. I opened this rescue because I hated to see small pets without homes, and wanted to help. We opened the rescue in 2003 with very few cages, but have since expanded and now take in a variety of small animals and have plenty of spare cages. It is just me running the rescue, so I'm always looking for volunteers to help with whatever needs it at the time.
