Sammie is a handsome brindle Boxer mix with a big heart and a deep desire to belong. He is affectionate, people focused, and happiest when he is close to his humans, whether that means cuddling on the couch, sleeping in bed at night, or heading out for a car ride.
Sammie has had several owners and at least three homes, and has returned to the shelter three times, through no fault of his own. Most recently, he was brought back to BENCHS when a neighbor who had been caring for him since June was no longer able to keep him. Sammie is now looking for what he has never truly had, a stable, committed, forever family willing to invest in him long term.
In a home, Sammie has shown himself to be:
-Fully house trained and able to signal when he needs to go outside
-Comfortable going out without a leash and reliably returning
-Crate free and trusted in the home
-Calm and settled when left alone, often resting in a bedroom or on his pet bed
-A snuggler who loves to cuddle and sleep in bed at night, just do not cover him, he is not a fan
He is very food motivated and enjoys learning. Sammie knows sit, shake, drop, and room, and was working on roll over. He enjoys meals and responds well to routine. He loves butt scratches, car rides, and being close to his people.
Sammie is friendly with small, polite dogs and enjoys greeting them outside. He has never lived with cats, that we know of, so his behavior around cats is unknown. He does chase birds and rabbits if given the opportunity, but has never caught one. He may jump up on new people out of excitement and can get a bit worked up if kids are very rambunctious.
Sammie thrives with structure, consistency, and calm leadership. New transitions into a home and new routines take time, and Sammie does best with patience, predictability, and clear expectations as he settles in. Like many dogs, he can become overstimulated if excitement escalates too much, so he does best with adults or families who understand dog body language and can help him stay regulated. In return, he offers loyalty, affection, and a strong bond with his people.
Sammie is not looking to bounce from place to place anymore. He is ready to settle, exhale, and finally belong. If you are someone who can truly commit to him, not just for now, but for life, Sammie has so much love to give.

More about this shelter
BENCHS was established in 1969 in Mankato, MN.
We serve Southern MN to help with owner surrenders, stray and unclaimed animals at local impounds.
BENCHS also offers a Food Share Program to help families keep their pets in their homes if they are going through a temporary hardship. As long as we have available donated food, we can have these families come in 2x a month. We may require animals be on a plan to be spay/neutered to receive this help.
