Barry is a small dog who has been in our care for several months, quietly working to build confidence in a world that once felt overwhelming to him. When Barry first arrived, he was extremely fearful and uncomfortable with handling. Through slow, patient, and consistent work by our caregiving team — especially Julie, our animal behavior coordinator — Barry has made meaningful progress, but he will need a calm and understanding home.
Barry now allows handling, seeks reassurance from trusted people, and continues to gain confidence at his own pace. He is a sensitive, observant dog who communicates discomfort through subtle stress signals rather than overt reactions. Because of this, Barry requires adopters who are experienced, patient, and attentive to canine body language.
This is not a fast or easy adoption. Barry is not suitable for loud, active, or busy households, and he is not appropriate for homes with running, high-energy children. If children are present, they must be older, calm, quiet, and respectful, and able to understand Barry’s need for space and predictability. Barry will do best in a quiet home with minimal comings and goings and a consistent routine.
It was a long road for him but now, once warmed up and trusting Barry loves affection, gets goofy spells with zooming and he just found out that toys and treats can be fun. He has shown polite interest in other dogs but may choose to walk away if interaction becomes too stimulating.
Barry has worked incredibly hard to get where he is today. His success depends on finding a home that will continue the patient, thoughtful approach that has helped him grow.

We are a local non-profit organization run and staffed by your neighbors. We make decisions on caring for homeless, unwanted, abandoned and abused domestic animals based on what we believe is best for them. We have no affiliation with any larger group and we receive no funding from any larger group that might influence our decisions or actions.
We advocate only for the animals in our care to help them find their forever home with you.
UPAWS does not receive operating funds from any governmental agency. We rely on donations from our neighbors and friends to make our efforts possible. We save consistently 98% of the animals who come to us – which is an award-winning success story. We want to educate everyone on proper animal care so there soon won’t be the three percent who come to us too sick or wounded to be saved. It’s your support that makes this dream possible.
