My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Leon — a lovable, playful mixed hound (about 2–3 years old) fostered in Golden, Colorado with big, heart-melting eyes and a talent for making people fall in love faster than you can say “who’s a good boy?” Leon was found as a stray in New Mexico and likely spent much of his life outdoors, but he’s ready for his favorite upgrade yet: a couch, a family, and a lifetime of being adored.

Leon’s Story (Resilient Survivor)
Leon had been waiting in a New Mexico shelter since October, and when time ran out, a foster in New Mexico stepped in and saved him from euthanasia. Now he’s safe, thriving, and ready for the next chapter: a forever home.

Personality (Certified Sweetheart)

Leon is affectionate and full of joy. He’s the kind of dog who looks at you like you’re the best thing that’s ever happened and wants to be near you all the time.

Social Skills (Everyone’s Friend)

  • Dogs: Super friendly and playful, and he’s submissive and polite with other dogs in a variety of situations including busy breweries

  • Cats: Good with cats (respectful roommate energy)

  • Kids: Has done well with kids even in busy dog park situations
(Note: Rez Dawg requires approval for adoption of adult dogs in homes with kids under 12 years old)

On-leash & Home Skills

Leon walks calmly on leash in the city, in the suburbs and on short hikes.  He has shown no visible prey drive for squirrels or bunnies, and stays close to his person. While potty training is a work in progress, he's making great progress with routine and consistency.  While it also took adjusting, he's now crate trained and sleeps through the night. Also: he’s non-destructive, quiet in the car, and great at baths.

Favorite Things (Besides You)

  • Fetch, especially with tennis balls (including an uncanny ability to find tennis balls you didn’t know you owned)

  • Independently entertained with bones, balls, and toys—while happy to play and share toys with others, also good at self-entertaining

  • Playtime with other dogs—he’s basically the “let’s be friends!” guy at the dog park

Energy Level & Ideal Home

While good at entertaining himself, Leon is pretty energetic and would thrive with:

  • A yard to zoom around in (or lots of daily adventures)

  • Another dog to play with (preferred—he loves a buddy)

  • People who enjoy a dog that’s equal parts cuddle and enthusiasm

Leon has already shown he’s resilient and full of love—surviving months of waiting and getting a second chance thanks to a foster who refused to give up (see note from that foster attached in photos). He makes friends wherever he goes.  Now he’s hoping this February, he'll find his furever valentine and humans who’ll give him what every good dog deserves: a loving home and someone to throw “one more” tennis ball.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We are doggie and kitty match-makers. We do everything in our power to assure that our dogs or cats will thrive in your environment.

Please start by submitting an application to adopt on our website. We do our best to respond to all applications but do to the number of applications received, this may always not be possible.

If you, your family and your lifestyle look like a good fit for the personality and needs of the animal, there's a phone call to chat and answer any additional questions. From there we will arrange a no-obligation meet and greet, where the animal could then go home with you, provided it is a good fit for all involved! (All this can happen within a week's time!)

A contract is signed at time of adoption. If for ANY reason you are unable to keep your companion, we quite passionately INSIST the animal be returned to us and NOT dropped in a shelter. We would happily take any of our adoptions back if it proves NOT a good fit for your family. :-)

Adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, basic vaccinations, (including rabies if old enough), deworming, rescue and transport costs, other medical services as needed (which can include but not limited to skin scrape, fecal exam, x-ray, amputation and hospitalization). Felines additionally receive an felv/fiv test and checked for ringworm with the Woods lamp prior to transport.

Adoption fees may vary due to special health circumstances, but typically start with...adult dogs (1 year and older): $450; puppies: $500; adult cats (1 year and older): $200; kittens: $275.

Go meet their pets

We are a foster based rescue ~ we DO NOT have a physical shelter at the moment. All of our dogs and cats reside in foster homes all throughout the Front Range and the Western Slope of Colorado. We have adoption events regularly at Petsmart stores in Denver, CO. If we do not have an event scheduled, we can arrange a time for you to meet one of our animals available for adoption.

More about this rescue

We relocate dogs and cats from high-intake shelters, animal control facilities, and reservations in the Four Corners area to animal rescue partners and forever homes in Colorado. We provide transportation to foster homes and other partner organizations, offer medical care and low/no cost spay and neuter services, manage a network of foster homes for temporary shelter, and run adoption events so that these animals can find forever homes.

Since March of 2012, we have transported thousands of at-risk dogs and cats to safety, solely on generous donations from caring individuals like you who see how dire the need is in and around the Navajo reservation.
