My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gary! He's a big guy who was running around the streets of San Bernardino when a rescuer trapped him and got him fixed, and put him with a safe colony. Turned out this big guy is very friendly and wants to be a spoiled inside cat now!

Gary is a perfect gentleman with great manners, and just wants to be loved. He will drape himself on your lap, or put his arms around your neck and just hug. He seems ambivalent about cats and dogs. At a recent visit to PetCo he lounged on us, watching dogs of all sizes and energy levels come and go, with zero reaction. He is now inside a foster home w other cats, and again, is just doing his thing.

Gary is neutered (he was ear tipped when he was fixed since they assumed he’d be a colony cat forever), up to date on shots, and microchipped.

At his recent vet check he was given a clean bill of health, other than being FIV+. See more on that below. The vet said that he looks fantastic - good fur and skin, good weight, mouth, ears, eyes, all look good. He doesn’t have any complications from FIV.

Gary has tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Here’s what that means:

FIV affects a cat’s immune system, but many cats live long, happy, normal lives with it.

There is no cure, but there is excellent management: good nutrition, routine vet care, and a stress-free indoor life.

FIV cannot be transmitted to humans or dogs. It is only spread to other cats through deep bite wounds—not through sharing beds, bowls, or grooming.

🏡 What Kind of Home Is Best for Gary? Gary could live with:

No other cats (ideal since he’s more susceptible to illness), or
Other FIV+ cats, or
Calm, non-FIV cats who get along and are vaccinated and stay indoors.

With a loving home and proper care, Gary can enjoy many more years filled with love, companionship, and comfort.
