My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Miracle
I have always been a timid cat since kittenhood. I don’t remember having a momma who taught me how to be brave, confident, and social. I may have been someone’s pet at one time, since I am already spayed, but I was never given the love I needed. I am a 4-year-old, DSH female cat with a coal-black coat. On August 28, 2025, I was brought to the HSHC by an Animal Control Officer. To say I was terrified barely describes my fear and anxiety. My reactions to any contact were to hiss, swat, and try to escape. Because my acceptance of my situation and my courage were not improving, I was moved into a foster home in November. That was the most important event of my life. My foster mom (FM) was also a Feline Care Specialist at the shelter, so she was well-versed in caring for frightened, undersocialized cats. I lived with her for over three months, and it was the happiest I’ve ever been. Don’t get me wrong. I was very fearful and reactive at first, but I made so much progress in that time. FM made many discoveries about me. I like other cats! The first time I left my hiding spot was when I heard one of the resident cats calling for FM. I perked up, called back to her, and ran to the door. FM began to allow me more and more opportunities to meet her cats. Recently, FM would find me contentedly sitting with her 4-year old cat. I love Temptation cat treats! They helped me build trust with FM. I also learned that I love being petted, especially cheek scratches. You might be surprised to learn that I love being brushed with a soft bristled brush. It is so relaxing and comforting to me. Once I felt secure and comfortable, I was always successful at using the litterbox. I am still a very shy lady. I feel safest when it begins to get dark. But FM had a great idea to get me to come out during the day! She put a heated bed in a sunny window in my foster room. It was impossible to resist this luxury, and I began to lie in it when the sun lit up the room. FM says I will continue to need encouragement, but she knew I was ready to return to the HSHC when I looked at her with trust in my eyes. I am still a scaredy cat, but I am hoping for a patient, loving person to see my charms and take me home. 2-10-26

More about this shelter

With an open admission policy, a No-Kill philosophy, and more than 3,100 animals crossing our threshold each year, we have still maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.

This is an amazing feat for any organization…let alone one that takes in some of the most abused, injured and seriously ill animals imaginable.
