My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Atlas
Age: 5 years
Breed: German Shepherd
Size: 64.2 pounds
Special Needs: Heartworm positive

Contact: transport@hssm.org

Atlas is a stunning 5-year-old German Shepherd with a noble presence and a heart just as strong as his name suggests. This handsome boy carries himself with confidence and intelligence, always observant of his surroundings and deeply devoted to his people. Atlas has reached a wonderful mature age where he balances calm loyalty with moments of playful fun.

He thrives on companionship and would love a home that appreciates the classic German Shepherd traits — intelligence, loyalty, and a strong bond with his family. Atlas enjoys staying active, exploring, and having a purpose, whether that’s going for walks, learning new things, or simply being a steady, loving presence by your side. He does well with other dogs, he is playful but is not too rough. He is good about listening and will come when instructed.

If you’re searching for a devoted companion who will stand by you through every chapter of life, Atlas is ready to be your loyal shadow and best friend. Atlas is heartworm positive, so he would need treatment so that he could live out the rest of his day happy and healthy.

Atlas's $250 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, up to date vaccines, microchip AND transport fee to a location near you. We currently have transportation to CT, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA, GA, and TN. Please email transport@hssm.org for more information on transports!

--> If you are interested in adopting Atlas please fill out our online application here: (https://forms.gle/nuKXoMu6gjS5DhFm8 - Dog). A staff member will reach out if your application is approved to discuss the adoption process. No fenced in yard required, and YES - we adopt to families with children! The adoption will not be final until the adoption contract is discussed and signed. Transports are arranged for specific dates, typically within 1-3 weeks of approving your application. Adopters will meet at a designated meeting spot to pick up their new companions. For further information, please first fill out the application referenced above.

**Due to import regulations we are not able to adopt to MA or RI residents at this time.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. HSSM’s facility was built using the nation’s leading Children’s Museums as models, with bright colors and oversized architectural sculptures. We offer: pet adoptions, foster program, return-to-owner efforts, spay/neuter and wellness services, volunteer program, pet transports, youth initiatives, a food pantry and pet retention program, an on-site thrift store, and more! In 2024, HSSM cared for over 5,000 homeless pets in house and touched over 16,000 animals in the community.

Since our incorporation in 1952, HSSM has been committed to ending pet overpopulation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM is the only Open Admissions Animal Shelter in South Mississippi, meaning we accept all animals in need, regardless of age, breed, health, or temperament. This commitment ensures that no lost pet is turned away. Oftentimes our open-admissions status in a community with a disproportionately high number of homeless pets leads to needless euthanasia of adoptable pets in our shelter HSSM has vowed to change this.
