My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

How this pet arrived:
Clifford was brought in by a community member on January 30, 2026.

Why this pet is the one for you:
Meet Clifford (yes... he really is big). True to his name, Clifford is a big dog with a big heart-and sometimes big feelings too. This gentle giant can feel unsure around new people, especially men, so he needs humans who will proudly advocate for his space on walks and when visitors come over. Giving him time and calm introductions helps him feel safe. Clifford's size may be impressive, but his nature is soft and sensitive. He's best suited to a home with children aged 8 and up who can respect his boundaries. Clifford came to us as a stray, so his past is a bit of a mystery, but he's ready to grow something even bigger than himself: trust, confidence, and a home.

Shy/Fearful Dog: This pet requires a virtual behavior consult, please watch THIS video to learn more about them.

More about this shelter

San Diego Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, is creating a more humane world by inspiring compassion and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Our lifesaving safety net has helped San Diego become the largest city in the U.S. to keep healthy and treatable shelter animals from being euthanized. We are a private, independent, nonprofit organization that is not affiliated with any other humane society or society for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

With campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, Ramona and San Diego, we provide animal services for 14 cities within San Diego County. We not only care for 50,000 animals in our communities but also share the expertise we have gained through our innovative programs with shelters nationwide so they can save more lives in their communities.

While our influence is expanding nationally, our top priority is meeting the needs of San Diego. We provide exceptional care for all animals through world-class veterinary medicine, shelter and most of all: love.
