My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

🐾 Rue – The Brilliant, High‑Drive Australian Shepherd with AKC Papers

Meet Rue, a stunning full‑blooded Australian Shepherd with AKC papers and the kind of intelligence and energy that make this breed so extraordinary. He will turn two years old on April 24, 2026, and he’s ready for a home that truly understands what a working‑minded dog needs to thrive.

Rue is an active, athletic boy who absolutely requires a secure, fenced‑in yard where he can run, explore, and burn off his energy safely. He does not try to jump fences, but he does need room to move. He’s incredibly smart and already off‑leash trained—he’ll return to you with the blow of a whistle, a testament to his natural drive and eagerness to work with his person.

Rue currently lives with both dogs and cats and does well with respectful, balanced dogs. He’s best paired with dogs who understand boundaries and don’t overwhelm him. He’s a sensitive, high‑drive dog who needs a home that is breed‑savvy—someone who knows how to provide the right mental and physical stimulation to keep him confident, calm, and fulfilled. Without that structure, he can become anxious or destructive, not because he’s “bad,” but because he’s incredibly intelligent and under‑challenged in his current environment.

Rue is heartworm positive but is already on a slow‑kill protocol and doing well. With continued care and a stable routine, he has every chance at a long, healthy life.

He would thrive with:

A knowledgeable Australian Shepherd or herding‑breed adopter

A fenced yard

Respectful dog companions (if any)

Plenty of exercise, enrichment, and mental stimulation

A calm, confident handler who can give him structure

Rue is located in Windsor, VA, but he can be transported to a loving adoptive home—a transport fee may apply depending on distance.

Rue is a truly exceptional dog with enormous potential in the right hands. He’s loyal, smart, eager to learn, and deeply bonded to his people once he trusts them. For the right adopter, he’s worth his weight in gold.

His adoption fee is $500.

If you’re ready to give Rue the active, structured, and loving home he deserves, he’s ready to give you his whole heart in return.

More about this rescue

Our Mission

Operation Save A Shelter Dog is a foster based, IRS-recognized 501c(3) rescue whose mission is to work with shelters on the East Coast by saving dogs at high risk of euthanasia or that have little hope of adoption in their current condition. Not only is it our goal to find furever homes for our dogs, but also to educate the public on the importance of spaying, neutering, vaccinating and providing preventative care for their pets.
