My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gabe was surrendered to Minnesota Sheltie Rescue when circumstances made it impossible for him to stay in his home where he was loved. He is gentle, affectionate and loyal - all the best things about a Sheltie!

AGE: 9 years old
SIZE: Gabe currently weighs 31 lbs. (down from a very heavy 42 lbs.). He should weigh about 25 lbs. He is on a weight loss program and his adopter will need to continue with this until Gabe is at a healthier weight.
TEMPERAMENT: Gabe is very sweet and likes men and women equally. He's a little cautious at first, but warms up in minutes. Gabe loves to be petted and snorts when he’s happy!
FENCE: Gabe could live in a home with no fence as long as he gets daily walks on leash to continue with his weight loss program, and as long as his adopter will commit to keeping him safe by always using a leash/lead outside, for his lifetime (as required in our adoption contract.)
DOGS: Gabe has been fine with the other two dogs in his foster home. He immediately followed their routine and is now warming up to them and starting to play. If another dog is too exuberant or pushy, he may curl his lip to communicate that he wants the dog to back off.
CATS: Gabe has met one cat so far and he seemed indifferent. He lived with a cat in his previous home.
KIDS: Unknown-no kids in his foster home, but he seems to have a sweet temperament so he may do o.k. with gentle older children (age 8+).
CRATE TRAINED: Gabe currently has free run of his foster home and only uses a crate for car trips.
HOUSETRAINED: Yes.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Gabe attended training as a puppy and responds to sit, down, shake and no. He is very well behaved.
LEASH MANNERS: Gabe walks well on a leash while wearing a harness.
CAR RIDES: Gabe will bark in his crate in the car, but rides well otherwise and does not get car sick.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Gabe is pretty low key and not too active at this time. He may become more active as he gets down to a healthier weight. He likes to play with toys and will fetch a ball. He has some mobility issues when getting up from a sitting or lying position which is likely weight related. He goes up and down 12 stairs in his foster home on a regular basis.
BARKING: Gabe barks when the other dogs in his foster home bark before meals, when he is excited or when he sees something in the yard. Not excessive barking, just normal Sheltie barking.
HEALTH ISSUES: Gabe has some degeneration in his joints that is being monitored and managed by our veterinarian and will be further evaluated when he loses much of his excess weight. Gabe needs a home that will continue to carefully measure his food, feed at scheduled feeding times and strictly limit treats so he can continue to lose weight. He is on Cosequin and Fish Oil for his joints and Deramaxx for pain for the time being, and he may continue to improve as he loses weight.

Gabe is a wonderful, easygoing boy, who would do well in a home with another dog(s) or as an only dog. He bonds quickly with people and needs a loving, gentle owner willing to give him the affection he craves. He is such a sweet dog and would make a wonderful addition for the right home.

For more information on our adoption process (which includes an application, references and a home visit prior to meeting dogs) or to see other Shelties available for adoption, please visit our website at www.mnsheltierescue.org, or contact us for the adoption application. Gabe's adoption fee is $125.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
