Karen is a truly special cat with quite the story of how she came into our care!
After Heartland flooded in June of 2024 our building was vacant and there was minimal foot traffic. One evening staff stopped by to make sure the building was locked up and noticed kittens underneath our shed. Once we discovered the kittens we set up trail cameras and traps to work on trapping the kittens and any other cats that had taken up residence while we were gone! While monitoring the cameras we discovered Karen and that those kittens were hers. We were able to trap all of them and the kittens were able to be socialized and adopted back in 2024! Karen was less than thrilled when we trapped and spayed her, hence the name Karen, so we released her back behind Heartland and started feeding her daily.
Karen learned what time we would feed her and started hanging around in our parking lot waiting. Initially, she would watch from afar and run away if anyone tried to approach her, but over the course of months she slowly started to trust us and wouldn't run away when we approached and would even eat with us sitting near her. Fast forward to over a year after our initial meeting and Karen was starting to follow people around outside and as the weather got colder she would even walk up to the back door and venture in occasionally. Once this happened we knew it was time to try and bring her in again, even if it was only for a the winter months to keep her warm and safe! When we brought her in she needed time to decompress and realize it was the same people she already knew and that being inside wasn't so bad! After a few weeks she started to accept treats from our hands and eventually was even letting us pet her!
Karen has blossomed into such a loving girl in the almost two years we have known her! She now loves getting pets from her friends and loves to lounge in her cage, she has not been brave enough to explore the rest of the cat room yet. We can't wait for her to find the patient, loving home that she deserves!
Karen is spayed, up-to-date on her FVRCP and Rabies vaccines and she is FIV and FeLV negative.
Karen is currently staying at Heartland! We are open Thursday 4pm-7pm, Friday 4pm-7pm, Saturday Noon-6pm and Sunday Noon-6pm. Feel free to stop by to meet her! No appointment necessary.
