Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Chess, and right now, he is playing it safe. This handsome 1½-year-old black and white gentleman with striking green eyes can usually be found tucked into the corner of his kennel, quietly observing the world around him. The shelter is a big, busy place — and for a sensitive soul like Chess, it can feel a little overwhelming.
He's not mean. Not even a little. He’s simply unsure. Beneath that cautious exterior is a gentle heart that just needs time to feel safe.
When you look into those gorgeous green eyes, you can see it — he wants to trust. He wants to relax. He just hasn’t realized yet that his forever home is out there waiting for him.
Chess will thrive with a patient adopter who understands that the best things in life aren’t rushed. Give him a quiet space, soft words, and steady love, and we’re confident he’ll begin to bloom.♟️💚 Give us a call at (740) 314-5583 for more information!

More about this shelter
We are the Jefferson County Humane Society and , except for our humane officers (who are paid very nominally), we are all volunteers! Our members were instrumental in getting a local levy passed to build a new and larger shelter and the doors opened in 2011. We are currently participating in Iams Home for the Holidays Program and the Purina Pets for People grant program. We are actively pursuing other grants and recently have been asked by the county to partner with them in the operation of the new shelter. Since we are a humane society, our main focus is on getting animals spayed and neutered so there are no more homeless pets. To that end, we bring in a mobile animal surgical clinic who performs spays and neuters at a reduced rate. We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts and, of course, for financial contributions (we are a non-profit, 501 (c)3) and pet adopters! Other items such as food, treats, pet carriers, cages, leashes, collars, food bowls, etc. are also ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Please contact us if you have an item to be donated or would like to volunteer with us to try to save some of these homeless, but very loveable, dogs!
