My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Oreo is a sweet and cuddly 4 year old cat looking for his forever home!

If you're looking for a new feline best friend, Oreo is your guy! Oreo will follow you around like a dog, rolling around by your feet for belly rubs, pushing his head into your hand when he wants a head massage — His favorite thing in the whole wide world is attention! Oreo is very mellow, great at being handled and just adores people. He is almost always purring when he’s with his humans!

Oreo has medium energy for an adult cat. He plays in 5-8 minute bursts for a total of 20-30 minutes per day. He is a great hunter and will bat around balls by himself, but loves hunting ribbons and the Cat Dancer wire toy.

Oreo has FIV, which means he is immunocompromised. But that doesn’t mean he can’t live a long, normal, and healthy life! Cats with FIV commonly have average lifespans. His day-to-day needs are the same as any other cat, but if he becomes sick it is important to get him medical attention early as he will not be able to fight it off on his own. FIV can only be spread between cats via fighting (deep bite wounds), pregnancy, or mating. Because FIV is spread only through deep bite wounds, FIV positive cats are able to live with FIV negative cats in stable social environments. You can read more about FIV here: https://tinyurl.com/58sf9wtj

Oreo used to be an outside cat until one day he had enough and when looking for his own home. He has no interest in going outside again, and is perfectly content with cuddles and wet food! With dry food he is more of a snacker but gets very excited when wet food comes out. From being a former outside cat, he has a few quirks, such as not knowing how to meow — he can only squeak! He is very quiet aside from a few squeaks to say hello or to let his humans know when it’s time for wet food.

Oreo currently lives in a 2-bedroom apartment with three adults, and he has company for most of the day. His ideal home would be with multiple people who are around often and ready to shower Oreo with pets throughout the day. He would love it if his human works from home — you can expect to have him nap on your desk while you work.

Looking for the perfect furry friend to brighten up your day? Oreo is your guy!

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
