Story
Peter Barker is a 1 and a half year old beagle mix. We believe he does not have a secret identity as spider dog, however we have never seen him and spider-dog in the same place. Peter Barker is full of energy and loves to play. He is ready for any amazing adventures that come his way. He is heartworm positive but $100 dollars of his treatment has been sponsored! Peter went to a foster home but was brought back due to him being territorial. Now because of this being on his kennel card, he is often overlooked and has been at the shelter for 6 months. Here at the shelter we have not seen any of this behavior from him. Peter Barker is good in his kennel, loves belly rubs, and even loves spending time with kids. He is enrolled in our Enrichment Academy, which makes him a prime candidate for extra toys and play time. Here at the shelter we offer a 3 day slumber party, to make sure he is the right fit for your family. We definitely recommend this to help him find his fur-ever home. He is quite the catch! Be sure to swing in if you're interested in learning more! The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is a progressive animal welfare organization located in Gulfport, MS. Each year HSSM houses approximately 5,000 homeless pets. Every day we are fighting a space capacity crisis as we try to care for the overwhelming amount of abandoned local pets. If you have a question about one of our adoptable animals, please give us a call at (228) 863-3354, email adoptions@hssm.org or stop by from 10am-5pm Tuesday-Friday or 10am-4pm Saturday. Story
We know a sweet little Beagle mix who is looking for love in all the right places. Sophie is a cute as a button youngster approximately 7 months old and weighing 25 lbs. She was found, with who we believe to be her mama, out in a barn on a road notorious for being a dumping ground for unwanted and obviously unloved dogs. Fortunately, she was taken in by good people who were kind enough to give her the help she needed. Sophie is still young enough that she has not gained total distrust of people. She is timid and shy, but she is also sweet, friendly, affectionate, and playful once she knows she is with kind people. Sophie is submissive with other dogs, but she sure does like to play once accepted. She will need a family who will be committed to helping her with confidence, gaining her trust, training her, and giving her the happily ever after she so very much deserves. Like any puppy she is full of typical puppy antics and will need to learn boundaries with positive reinforcement (treats and toys are great rewards for this baby). She has much to learn simply because she was never given the opportunity until now. Sophie is already spayed, up to date with vaccinations and current on preventatives. Sadly, she is heartworm positive (no symptoms or issues) but she is currently being treated for them. Sophie is a little diamond in the 'ruff' but with a little work and polishing up she will be a great little girl. If you would love to be Sophie's forever mom or dad we'd sure like to hear from you! Story
Calling all Beagle mix fans! Sadie is a lovely little Beagle/Terrier mix approximately 2 to 3 years old and weighing 30 lbs. It would appear she did not have a good start to life, but finally good fortune smiled on her when she found her way to a good human who took her in and gave her the help she needed. She is shy and timid and hesitant when meeting new people which leads us to believe she has suffered from abuse in the past. Sadie will need special people with patience and big hearts who will give her the time she needs to gain their trust. With time and lots of love she has gained the trust of the family who is fostering her. Once she feels safe, she is very loving and affectionate. She loves to run and play with a multitude of toys. She is very good with the other dog she showed up with, believed to be her pup. She still has much to learn and will need people who understand this and are committed to helping her learn and gain some much-needed confidence with kindness and understanding. She's a bit of a fixer upper who with time, kindness, and guidance will be the best loyal friend you'll probably ever have. Sadie is already spayed, up to date on vaccinations, current on preventatives, and is currently being treated for heartworms (she has absolutely no symptoms and is doing great with treatment). If you can give this little lady the forever home and life she is so well deserving of then we would love to hear from you. Story
Minnie is a 2 year old 30 pound chunky beagle mix. Minnie was found in the utility room of an abandoned house where she had a litter of ten puppies. Even in these conditions Minnie was an angel and so grateful to be rescued. Now that her pups are adopted she needs her own loving family. She will make a perfect family dog she loves everyone and everything she meets. Minnie will need some work on teaching her not to jump on you for hugs so she may be too much for small kids. Minnie would love to go on adventures with an active family and loves car rides. She is great on a leash and in the house. Minnie is overall a perfect companion and anyone would be lucky to adopt her. Friends of Jackson County Animal Shelter Pets (FJCASP) is a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. Dixon is a 5 year old, 30 pound beagle who was abandoned at a local shelter. Dixon loves all dogs and cats and would be good with kids. He does require a secure fence as he loves to roam and sniff. Dixon is low heartworm positive and his monthly treatment will be provided. He would love an outdoors type family and a comfy couch to chill on.
