Story
Spinelli was picked up by Animal Control at Oak Park in Richland after being found severely underweight and clearly not well cared for for quite some time. Since arriving at our shelter, Spinelli has been on a special feeding regimen and receiving lots of TLC from staff while she worked on gaining weight and rebuilding her strength. She still has a few pounds left to gain, but this girl is well on her way to becoming her best self. Spinelli is now spayed and ready to go home today! She currently weighs about 44 pounds, and our best guess is that she is a Belgian Malinois mix. And after spending time with her… wow, is this girl smart. She carries many of the traits the breed is known for—intelligent, observant, eager to engage, and constantly taking in the world around her. On walks, she does very well on leash but is absolutely scanning the environment at all times, sniffing every sniff and making sure she sees ALL of the things. She already responds to both Spanish and English commands including sit, shake, down, stay, kisses, and gentle. One of the cutest things about Spinelli is that when you ask her to do something, she’ll sit so calmly and stare up at you like, “Okay… what’s next?” You can practically see her little brain working. And while Spinelli may put on her “big scary girl” bark when you first walk by her kennel, please don’t judge her for that. A little sweet talk and a treat or two later and she warms up quickly and becomes an absolute joy to spend time with. What stands out most about Spinelli is that despite whatever life looked like before she got here, she still wants to connect, learn, and engage with people. She is going to be an incredible dog for the right person.Because of her breed mix and intelligence level, we would strongly recommend that Spinelli go to a home familiar with Belgian Malinois-type dogs or willing to thoroughly research the breed and their needs. Dogs like Spinelli thrive with structure, consistency, training, mental enrichment, and appropriate physical outlets, and they are not always the right fit for every household. Her history with other dogs or cats is unknown. Meet and greets are required with any dogs currently in the home to help ensure compatibility.Spinelli’s adoption fee is $50. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on age-appropriate vaccines, and treated for fleas, ticks, and worms. Our shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Holds, deposits,
